(From our own correspondent.) October 5. His Grace Archbishop Redwood paid a short visit to Palmerston during the week. A largely attended and enthusiastic gathering took place at Dustin's, Limited, under the auspices of the Friendly Societies’ Council, on Thursday night. The function was a smoke concert to celebrate the winding-up of the inter-society card tournament of the season. During an interval in the proceedings, the Mayor handed the recently-won shield to Bro. M. J. Kennedy on behalf of the H.A.C.B. Society. The speakers for the Hibernians were Bros. Kennedy, GLeeson, and McGrath. Musical items were given during the evening. Bros. J. Hurley and Hunt contributed an Irish jig and a Highland fling respectively. At the concert and social to be held on next Wednesday night in aid of the bazaar funds occasion will be taken to present the Rev. Father Doolaghty with an address and purse of sovereigns. The many friends of Constable .Hattie will hear with regret of his death, which occurred on Saturday after a long and painful-illness. The late Mr. Hattie, who was a recent convert to our holy faith, died fortified by the rites of the Church.
