(From our own correspondent.) October 2. The Catholic Club has now a membership of over 80. This is most encouraging. The Catholic social which is to be held on October 17 promises to be a great success, A committee of ladies and gentlemen has been formed to bring it to a successful issue. A progressive euchre party was held last Thursday evening amongst the Catholic Young Men’s Club members and their lady friends in St. Joseph’s Schoolroom, and, in spite of counter attractions, quite a large number attended. The prize-winners were Mrs. Manning, Miss K. Mullins and Messrs Crosby and T. Johnson. Much sympathy is felt here with Rev. Father O’Malley in the loss he has sustained by the death of his mother. A Requiem Mass was celebrated on Wednesday morning, a good congregation being present, A number of the school children received Holy Communion, and offered their prayers for the repose of the soul of the deceased. At the weekly meeting of the Catholic Young Men’s Club, held to-night, a vote of condolence with Rev. Father O’Malley was passed, and it was decided that the members approach the Holy Table in a body on Sunday for the repose of the soul of the deceased. Ellerslie (From* an occasional, correspondent.) A very successful social gathering in aid of the church funds was held in the parish hall, Ellerslie, on Wednesday, October 1. There was a large attendance. The function was the conclusion of a seines of entertainments carried out during the season in aid of the church funds. The committee responsible, namely, Mesdames Fergus, Gavin, Neave, Miss Hogan, and Messrs. Sexton and Kelly, are to be congratulated on the success of their. efforts. On Monday, September 29, the Rev. Father Tormey was the recipient of a number of presents from the school children of the district in honor of his feast day. The pupils of the EHerslie Convent gave an entertainment in his honor, during which they presented him with six very fine dining-room chairs. The Tanmure children presented him with a beautiful tabernacle veil, and the children from the Howick Convent made him a present of a handsome pair of' curtains. This is tangible evidence of the popularity of Father Tormey with the children of his parish. In thanking the donors for the very fine presents, the Rev. Father said he hoped the time was not far distant when fTfe children would be accommodated in their new school, and on Sunday last he made an appeal to the congregation to contribute towards the erection of the building. On a recent Sunday the attention of the congregation was drawn towards the necessity of the church

being re-painted, and our pastor said he hoped that as the Catholic Federation was established in r the parish, "that body would see that Church matters received attention, and that arrangements be made for this much-needed work. As a result, on the following Saturday afternoon, a band of about a dozen men,, turned up armed with the necessary material and set to work to paint the church. The first coat was completed In the one afternoon. The ladies also took an active interest in the matter, for, during the afternoon, a number of them came on'the scene with well-filled baskets, and provided afternoon tea ; and refreshments for the workers. This was much appreciated by the men, who were grateful to the ladies for their thoughtfulness. As the foregoing shows, there is no doubt that the Ellerslfe parish committee of the Catholic Federation Is a practical and very live body.
