ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGION

(From our own correspondent.) February 1. All the schools of the city open on Monday. His Lordship Bishop Grimes arrived from the south this morning to perform the opening ceremony in connection with the Lower Hutt Convent, for the Sisters of the Mission. The many friends of the Rev. Father James Goggan, S.M., 01 Bouicott street, who had been confined to iris bed for some time, will be pleased to learn that he is now recovering. The Rev. Father Venning memorial committee has decided to make a monthly collection for the fund to build a memorial school, and will commence on Sunday, February 9. All subscribers to the fund will be presented with a souvenir in the shape of a photo of the late Rev. Father Venning. The many friends of Mr. J. W. Callaghan, the prominent Hibernian, will be pleased to le'arn of the success of his son, Master James Callaghan, who, it will be remembered, as a pupil of the Marist Brothers' School, Thomdon, won a scholarship in the Sacred Heart - College', Auckland, last year. This year he has succeeded in winning a National Scholarship. Much sympathy has been expressed with Mrs. Davis and her family in the loss they have sustained by the death of a member of the family in the person of Brother Charles (Davis), which occurred in Auckland recently. The late Brother Charles was stationed ; n Wellington some six years ago, and had endeared himself to many by his kindly and unassuming disposition. —R.I.P. . The Wellington Education Board at its last meeting declined to entertain the application of Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, of St. Patrick's College, to have that institution classed as a secondary college for State scholarships. It will be interesting for Catholics to know the names of those who recorded their votes against granting justice to our Catholic secondary schools. The ti'vtiling Post reports that the following attended the meeting: Messrs. ' R. Lee (chairman), A. W. Hogg, Kebbell, William Allan, Moss, J. G. W. Aitken, H. Freeman, and W. H. Field, and that the chairman's motion against granting the application was carried with only one dissentient, and that dissentient was Mr. W. H. Field, late M.P. for Otaki. The clergy of the archdiocese assembled here last Monday for trie annual retreat, which was conducted at St. Patrick's College, by Rev. Father Barry, C.SS.R. The retreat concluded yesterday, and the following changes in the clergy are announced: —Rev. Father Walsh, assistant priest at the Lower Hutt, succeeds the Rev. Father Cahill as parish priest at Dannevirke; Rev. Father Cahill goes to Eltham in place of Rev. Father Ainsworth, S.M., who replaces the Rev. Father W. D. Goggan, S.M., at Nelson; Rev. Father O'Beirne, of New Plymouth, is transferred to Inglewood, Rev. Father Bergin from Manaia to Waipawa, Rev. Father Saunderson from Waipawa to Manaia, Rev. Father Kelly from Foxton to Kaikoura, Rev. Father Dore from Kaikoura to Foxton, Rev. Father W. D. Goggan, S.M., from Nelson to Meeanee, Rev. Father W. Tymons from St. Mary's Scholasticate, Greenmeadows, to Tirorndon (Wellington) in place of the late Rev. Father Venning. , The final meeting of the Boxing Day picnic committee was held on last Tuesday evening at St. Patrick's Hall, Mr. B. Doherty presiding. The secretary, Mr. L. T. Reichel, presented the report and balance sheet, which disclosed the very handsome net profit of £72, and this amount has been handed over to the Wellington Catholic Education Fund. The success of the' picnic is largely due to the efforts of the ladies' branch of the H.A.C.B. Society, under the direction of Sisters G. O'Flaherty and D. McGrath and Mrs. Sommerville. These ladies worked so energetically that they were able to cater during the day for. a thousand children, to provide refreshments for the band, committee, and clergy, and- stock the refreshment booth with-

out any financial assistance from the committee, and, what is more surprising, to hand over £2O in cash to' the fund. The ladies were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their splendid i work. Mr. Reichel (secretary) was 'also accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and the chairman, on behalf of the committee, wished him ban voyage on the eve of his departure for New York,; whither he has been called in with the Reichel Automatic Fire Alarm, of which he is the patentee. A further step towards the formation of a Catholic Federation for New Zealand was effected on last Sunday afternoon, when, despite a heavy downpour of rain, a large number of representatives of the various Wellington parishes assembled in St. Mary of the Angels' Church, Bouicott street, to receive the draft constitution and rules of the Federation drawn up by the committee appointed for the purpose at a previous meeting. Very Rev. Dean O'Shea, S.M., V.G., presided, and there were also present Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M. (Provincial), Von. Archdeacon Devoy, S.M., Rev. Fathers A. T. and J. Herring. In opening the meethig Dean O'Shea stated that in Christchurch, Dunedin, and Auckland the movement was being taken up enthusiastically by the clergy and laity. The object of the meeting that afternoon was to adopt a constitution, and the next step would be .to elect parish committees, after which the Diocesan Council would be appointed. As soon as the Diocesan Councils were established, a central council would be elected to act as a controlling authority for the whole of the Dominion. The meeting approved of the draft constitution and rules, with some amendments, and the following provisional Dominion Council was elected : —Very Rev. Dean O'Shea (ex officio), Messrs. J. W. Callaghan, P. D. Hoskins, M. O'Kane. R. P. Flanagan, A. H. Casey, B. Ellis, Girling-Butcher, T. McCosker, and J. J. L. Burke.
