MARIST BROTHERS’ SCHOOL, WANGANUI

Rev. Father Mahoney presided, in the unavoidable absence of the Very Rev. Dean Holley, at the presentation of prizes at the Marist Brothers’ School, Wanganui. Brother Basil, the Director, spoke eulogistically of the demeanour of the boys during the year, their application to work, and their successes at the local and Civil Service examinations. After the prizes were distributed, Father Mahoney gave some practical suggestions to the pupils regarding how they were to spend their holidays, employ their time usefully and benefit by the lessons given and the knowledge imparted by the Brothers who so untiringly, unselfishly and devotedly gave them all their time and care, energy and teaching ability, to prepare them not alone for the battle of the future in this life, but above all, for the greater life to come. The pupils gave Brother Basil, who is leaving Wanganui, a very pleasant surprise at the close of the prize-giving. Janies Reardon, one of the seniors, accompanied by William Molan, emerged from the ranks, carrying a very handsome portmanteau. In a short speech he explained how the boys, on hearing of the Brother Director’s departure, grew determined to give him some earnest of the respect in which they held him, and of the gratitude which was due to the devotion with which he labored to promote not only their mental and moral formation, but, in addition, all that tended to advance their interests and secure their progress in the varying phases of school life. Brother Basil, who felt the occasion of separation very keenly, spoke approvingly of the gratitude of which their gift was the outcome, and with much emotion said that the valuable present would always serve to remind him of the pleasant years and happy days lie spent anions the boys of Wanganui. \
