Greymouth

(From an occasional correspondent.) December 24. At the closing concert given by the pupils of the Convent School, Grey mouth, the ‘ Bevilacqua Medal ’ was presented for the first time. This medal, together with a handsome volume on scientific subjects, is provided by the income arising from a sum of £3OO bequeathed for the purpose by the late Mr. Vincent Bevilacqua. The first recipient of the girl’s medal was Miss Kathleen Egan, who scored the highest marks in the Sixth Standard at the recent examination of the Convent School. The medala very beautiful gold one-bears on the obverse the initials of the winner, and on the reverse the words ‘ Bevilacqua Medal,’ the lull name of the winner, and the date. The first winner of the boy s medal is Master Ernest Donovan, a pupil of the Marist Brothers, Greymouth. The following is a summary of the successes obtained at the Convent School, Greymouth, during the past twelve months:—Teachers’ Class C and D—s successes matriculation and solicitors’ general knowledge one pupil passed; Civil Service junior, 7.pupils passed; elocution (West Coast competitions)Ladies’ class 8 prizes; children’s classes, 4 prizes; one third place, 4 three special mentions. Music—Theory of music, 15 passed. Practical examination 32 passed. Art of teaching (in connection with Trinity College, 'London) 3 candidates were presented, and passed. ■>
