Masterton

(From an occasional correspondent.)

August 31. The many friends of Very Rev. Dean McKenna will be pleased to hear that he is making good progress towards recovery, after a rather severe illness lasting several weeks. The Rev. Fathers Cullen and Venning, of Wellington, assisted here during his illness.

The usual meeting of the H.A.C.B. Society was held on last Tuesday, Bro. Flavin presiding. The branch has been very unfortunate for some months through losing several of its members by removal from the district, and at its last meeting resignations were received from Bros. W. Duggan (vice-president), J 4 Dunn (guardian), and M. O’Leary (treasurer), who have left the district. The balance sheet for the quarter was read, and showed the branch to be in a very sound financial position. . .

The Children of Mary held a most successful progressive euchre party on last Tuesday in St. Patrick’s schoolroom. There was a large attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent . The first prizes were won by" Miss Clarke and Mr. C. Flavin. The committee, consisting of Misses Stempa (2), Chapman (2), R. Frost, L. O’Dowd, M. Collins, are to be congratulated on their efforts, •* . -

Napier (From an occasional correspondent.) At the annual competitions, held recently in Napier, Miss Lillian , Strangman, a pupil of the convent

school, succeeded in gaining the gold medal for the senior violin test, and in the contest for players under 18 she was also the winner, securing, the highest number of marks awarded during the competitions. The judge (Herr Max Scherik) in announcing the results of the contest, remarked that Miss Strangman was easily , the winner, and the best instrumentalist he had heard since the competitions began. As a result she carried off the special prize-a trophy presented by Mr. McClurg to the champion violinist. Wanganui * (From our own correspondent.) August 28. , 3 A new system of supporting the Catholic schools has been started here, which entirely does away with the old method of collecting. A meeting was held on last Sunday evening to consider it, when there was a very large attendance. Over 400 names have been handed in so far, but it is hoped it will reach to 600. The social that was held in the Druids’ Hall on last Thursday was a great success, there being a large attendance. Among those present were the Very Rev. Dean Holley and Rev. Fathers Moloney and Mahoney. The entertainment which was held on the evenings of Wednesday and Thursday was a great success. The local papers gave it great praise. Mr. G. J. Fama' is to be congratulated on its success. The takings altogether amounted to close on £l5O. Invercargill ' (From our own correspondent.) - . r September 2. 'v" It is with deep regret that I have to record the death of Mrs. Murphy, wife of the local Registrar of Old Age Pensions. Mrs. Murphy, who was formerly a Miss Crowe, of Dunedin, had been married just about twelve months, and had made many friends since* coming to reside in Invercargill. She passed away yesterday evening after receiving the last rites of the Church from Rev. Father Woods. She leaves behind her a baby boy. Much sympathy is extended to Mr. Murphy in his very sad bereavement.—R.l.P.
