OBITUARY

MRS. BURGER, KUMARA. There passed away on August 12 a very old and much respected parishioner in the person of Mrs. Margaret Burger, at the age of 68 years. The deceased lady had resided for nearly forty years in the Kumara parish. By her pious life, her Christian charity, the deceased left a splendid example to her many friends. She was always of a bright and cheerful disposition, despite the hardships and trials incidental to the life of a pioneer. For some weeks before her death she suffered from a painful illness, which she bore with Christian resignation. A husband, five sons, and four daughters are left to mourn their loss. A Solemn Requiem; Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, August 14. The Rev. Father Finnerty celebrated the Mass, and in the choir were Very Rev. Dean Carew, Rev. Fathers Burger (son of deceased), Gilbert, Clancy, Creed, and O’Connor. A large number of friends took part in the funeral cortege : to the Greymouth cemetery, where the remains were interred. Among the many tokens of sympathy was a handsome wreath from the Mayor and councillors of. Kumara, and one from the members of St. Mary’s Choir, Hokitika. Rev. Fathers Creed, O’Connor, and Burger assisted at the last solemn rites at the graveside. - ■ . - On Thursday, August 29, a Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Patrick’s . Church, Waimate (writes an occasional correspondent),'for the repose of the soul of Mrs. Burger, mother of Rev. Father Burger, of this parish. The Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Burger, Rev. Father Kerley being deacon, Rev. Father Smyth subdeacon,• and Rev. Father, Murphy (Timaru) master of ceremonies. There were present-in the sanctuary Very Rev. Father O’Connell, S.M., Rev. Fathers Aubry, S.M., Taylor, S.M., and Hoare, S.M., who chanted the music. The presence of a large congregation testified: the sympathy of the parishioners for the Rev.
