Grey Education Board and Scholarships

SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE

(From an occasional correspondent.)

Greymouth, August 13. Following the suggestion contained in the leading article of the N.Z. Tablet of August 1, Very Rev. Dean Carew, S.M., wrote to the Grey Education Board requesting that body to ‘approve’ of the Convent Secondary School, Greymouth, as a school where the Board and National Scholarships might be tenable. At a meeting of the board held last night (August 12) Mr. James Kerr moved that the Dean’s request be acceded to. Mr. R. Kettle seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously. The Board scholarships can thus be taken out at the convent secondary school, conducted by the Sisters of Mercy, also the national scholarships on receiving the further ‘ approval’ of the Minister for Education. The gratitude of the Dean, the Sisters of Mercy, and the Catholic community generally is due to the liberal and fair-minded chairman and members of the Grey Education Board, who have uniformly exhibited a spirit of sympathy and fair-play wherever Catholic educational interests have been concerned.
