OBITUARY

MR. JOHN YOUNG, LOWER HUTT. ■ (From an occasional correspondent.) There passed away at Lower Hutt on February 5, Mr. John Young. Deceased had not enjoyed good health for some time past; nevertheless his death came as a shock to his'many friends. Born in Scotland in 1840, he arrived in New Zealand in 1858. He was engaged in .the .Public Works Department for many years, and retired in 1903, since when he resided at Lower Hutt, where he was well known and highly esteemed. The funeral was a large and representative one. The Hibernians formed a guard of honor, and acted as pall-bearers, the deceased being a member of Lower Hutt branch. Very Rev. Father Lane and Rev. Father Walsh officiated at the graveside. Deep sympathy is felt for Mrs. Young and family, there being one son and four daughters to mourn their loss.— R. X. P»

SISTER' M. ST. REGIS (MEYER), CHRISTCHURCH.

, There passed away on last Thursday morning at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Lower High street (writes our Christchurch correspondent), Sister M. St. Regis in her 74th year, after a religious life of* 49 years. The deceaser Sister, who was one of the oldest in the local community of the Order of Notre Dame des Missions, came to New Zealand in 1868, .and was a native of Colmar, in Alsace, and of German parentage. Always most active and energetic, she was only seriously ill for about a week. She was attended by the Very Rev. Father Price, Adm. (chaplain), her death being peaceful and happy. A Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of the deceased Sister was celebrated in the convent chapel on last Saturday morning by the Very Rev. Father Price. His Lordship the Bishop' gave the Absolution at the coffin, and in brief and appropriate terms addressed the assembled community. The resident clergy and Rev. Father Daull, S.M,A., Lincoln; were also present in the sanctuary. The boarders of the convent joined in the funeral procession, the interment being in the community plot in Linwood Cemetary.—

MRS. WILLIAM SHIRRIFFS, OHAKUNE. Very sincere sorrow is felt (writes our Christchurch correspondent) at the death of Mrs. William Shirriffs which occurred on March 1, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Brick, Madras street,-St. Albans, at the early age of twenty-six years, and after a brief illness. Much sympathy is felt for the mother of deceased and other bereaved relations, two of whom are religious of the Order of Notre Dame des Missions. Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of the deceased was celebrated m St. Mary’s Church,. Manchester street, on Monday March 4, by the Rev. Father Hoare, S.M; The other clergy present, and who also assisted at the , interment in the Linwood Cemetery, were the Rev. Fathers Leen (Rangiora), Hanrahan (Cathedral), and Dignan, S M (St. Mary’s). - The funeral was largely' attended ’by friends of the family of deceased, who; are much-respec-ted and devoted parishioners of St. Mary’s.
