v;;;;; . MRS. '■POTHAN, WAIROA. > ' ■ (From an occasional correspondent./ ! On; Monday night, February 26, there passed away at her daughter’s residence, Wairoa, Catherine Anne, relict of the late William -Pothan, aged 70. ; The de- -C ceased, who arrived in Dunedin about 45 years ago, was a native of Kilkenny. After a short stay in Dunedin, where she was married, she went with her husband to Charleston, and a few years after settled at Ahaura, Grey 'Valley, where most of her life was spent, v The late Mrs. Pothan was always a fervent and faithful Catholic, most devoted ‘to her children, who were brought up in the same good dispositions as their pious mother. She assisted the Church in every possible way, and was well known in the West Coast for 'her charitable acts. She was attended in her last illness by the - Rev. Father Lepretre, and died fortified by the rites of the Church. On Thursday morning, February 29, the remains were taken to the church, where a Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Lepretre, who also officiated at the graveside in the Wairoa Cemetery,' ‘~ : K where the: interment took place. ; The funeral was- attended by a large number of mourners. McPADDEN, WESTPORT. \ Mrs. McPadden, wife of Mr.. Myles . McPadden, J.P., passed away on February 20 at her- residence, Grouse Lodge, Duller Bridge, Westport, to the great regret of a wide circle of friends. The - deceased lady had lived in New Zealand forty-three-years; the greater part of the time in the Westport district. She was a native of County Clare, Ireland, and 62 years of age. She leaves a sorrowing husband, -an adult family of nine, and a sister (Mrs. Ahern,-,of Cape Foulwind) to mourn their loss. Mrs. McPadden, who • died : fortified by all the rites of the Church of which she was a devoted member, was greatly respected, and-the bereaved family have widespread sympathy. The funeral cortege was one of : the .largest ever seen in Westport, friends of the well known family from far and near assembling to pay their last tribute of respect. Rev. (From our own correspondent.) v ' The death of Mr. James Toomey, which occurred at the Westland Hospital, where he had been under treatment for the past five months, removes from our midst a respected townsman. The late Mr. Toomey was for many years a member of the Hokitika Benevolent Society, of which institution he was the treasurer. For sixteen years he represented the Kumara Borough Council on the late Charitable Aid Board; Mr. Toomey also gave freely of his services to the cause of education, as a member of the Hokitika School Committee, while at the time of his death he was a member of the High School Board and the Westland,-Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. For many faithful services the public owe the late Mr. Toomey a debt of ; gratitude. The deceased took a .prominent part ‘in the welfare of St. Mary’s Church, and also a great interest in . the younger members of the community, being for several years president of the Catholic Young Men’s - Debating Club. The deceased arrived in Hokitika from Melbourne in the early sixties, and has resided here ever since. He leave two sons and three brothers (Messrs.
