Greymouth
(From our own correspondent.) ‘ October 14. Mr. Charles Schilsky, examiner for practical music for Trinity College, London, arrived in Greymouth on Wednesday, 11th inst., and conducted the practical examination in the convent on Thursday and Friday, 12th and 13th inst. Twenty-two candidates were presented by the Sisters of Mercy and all were successful. The following is' the list: Higher Examination.—Associate Pianists : Chrissie Baybutt, A.T.C.L., 90; Lena Higgins, A.T.C.L., 83. Certificated Pianists‘Vera Robinson, 75 Molly Noonan, 71; Gladys Hannam, 62. Higher Local Honors. Veda Michel, 87; Rita Hannan, 85; Eileen Green, 81. Senior Pass.—Mabel Thompson, 71. Intermediate Pass. Gladys Williams, 77; Winnie O’Neill, 74. ' . , j . . Junior Honors.—Winnie O’Neill (violin), 86; Inga Hannam, 85; Kathleen Egan, 81. „ -.- Junior Pass. —Maggie Flintoff, 70. Preparatory. Myra Davies (violin), 87; Inga Hannam (violin), 87; Kathleen Hannan, 86; Nellie Kilgour, 86; Isabelle Burrell (singing), 83; Emily Oliver, 83 ; Gwendoline McCarthy, 76. ! * Mr. Schilsky gave a recital after the examination in the convent schoolroom to the Sisters and pupils. The pieces played were :— ‘ Humoreske ’ (Dvorak) ; Bach’s ‘ Air ’ ; Beethoven’s ‘ Romance in F’; ‘ Canzonetta ’ (Ambrosio); ‘ Legende ’ (Wieniawski); Nocturne in D major ’ "(Chopin). At the conclusion of the recital a beautiful gold medal, the gift of the Very Rev. Dean Carew, was presented by the Dean to Miss Chrissie Baybutt, A.T.C.L., and a silver medal to Miss Lena Higgins, A.T.C.L. Misses Vera Robinson (Certificated Pianist), Mollie Noonan (Certificated Pianist), Gladys Hannam (Certificated Pianist), Veda Michel, Rita Hannan, Eileen Green, Gladys Williams, Mabel Thompson, Winnie O’Neill, Myra Davies, and Inga Hannam received beautifully-bound volumes of music. Mr. Schilsky then gave out the cards to the pupils, and the enjoyable proceedings terminated with a happy little speech from the Dean and Mr. Schilsky.
