SACRED HEART CONVENT, TIMARU

(From our own correspondent.) The annual distribution of prizes to the pupils of the Sacred Heart Convent School was held in the large hall on Friday evening, December 16. His Lordship Bishop Grimes presided, and there were also present Very Rev. Dean Ginaty, V.G., Rev. Fathers Tubman, Aubry, Woods, etc. A high-class and excellently rendered musical programme was given. The pupils also put on a very fine drama, entitled, ‘ St. Catherine of Alexandria.’ The scene was laid in the town of the same name, A.D. 307, and the dramatic personae were ; Maximum Galerius, Cassar, Tryphon, a Greek Sage, Porphyry, captain of the Pretorian Guards, a Magistrate, St. Catherine of Alexandria, Salunella, Mother of St. Catherine and Fiberonia, her attendant. The scenes were splendidly arranged, especially the tableau showing the burial of. St. Catherine by angels. The French and German recitations deserve special mention,

the fluency displayed showing thorough acquaintance with the soul as well as the grammar of these languages. His Lordship, before distributing the well-earned rewards, congratulated the school on the excellent results of the year’s training; he wished the scholars most pleasant holidays, and urged them to be in their respective homes bearers of joy radiating all round them the cheerfulness and unselfishness they had acquired! by example and precept in their Alma Mater. At the close all proceeded to the convent chapel, and his Lordship officiated at Solemn Benediction. This ceremony brought to a close the scholastic year.. The following is the prize list : .
