ST. DOMINIC’S COLLEGE, DUNEDIN

The annual distribution of prizes took place at St. Dominic's College on Wednesday of last week. The Right Rev. Dr. Verdon presided, and the Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., and Rev. Father Cock were also present. The report for the year was in the following terms The completion of the scholastic year brings with it gratifying results for teachers and pupils, and is marked by the usual issuesuccess in the various grades and subjects taught. As regards religious and moral culture, it can be justly said of the students that a constant striving after higher things and a desire to even raise the standard of their ideals has been the prevailing note. Religious knowledge has received close and enthusiastic attention, while secular studies have made steady and uniform progress. The public examinations early in the year, the Oxford examinations in June, and the musical examinations in November all testify to the application and ability of the pupils. In the Oxford examinations an unusually high percentage of passes may be recorded; all the pupils passing in most of the subjects presented. Under the skilful tuition of Miss Mowat, the students have received valuable aid in physical culture. Elocution also engaged the interest and attention of the seniors. In the art department good work, creditable alike for variety, color, and design, has been exhibited. The recent bazaar having made more than ordinary demands on the energies of the pupils, a considerable amount of excellent work was the result. The needlework classes showed useful and skilled samples in plain and fancy work. Richly embroidered blouses may be taken as specimens of the art needlework. The domestic economy course, taken for the Oxford examinations, has laid a good foundation for the practical work of the convent cookery class. The honor of the recreation ground has been well sustained by the college hockey team and the Girls' Tennis Club. Taking into consideration the numerous branches in which the pupils are engaged, and the amount of application and interest each branch requires, we can certainly commend the pupils and congratulate them on their year's work. The wreath for amiability, a reward to the girl who has throughout the year proved herself kind and gentle to her companions, and polite and amiable to her teachers, has been awarded by the votes of the pupils to Miss Moloney. In the School of Music, of the 33 successful candidates, 18 took honors, in the following order:Two diplomas in the higher examination, Trinity College; one advanced grade (singing), Associated Board; four advanced, Trinity College; one intermediate grade, Trinity College; two higher school grade, Associated Board; five junior grade, Trinity College two elementary grade, Associated Board one primary grade, Associated Board. In the session of 1909, Winifred J. Hawcridge obtained an exhibition for pianoforte playing in the advanced grade, Trinity College, and the Plunket medal, scoring a percentage of 97 marks. For the current year the highest marks (98) in the advanced division, Trinity College, have been gained by Miss Elsie Paton, who has thus proved herself to be the best candidate in New Zealand in the practical senior examination. Yet, strange to say, the Governor's medal has been awarded this year to a student who obtained fewer marks than Miss E. Paton. There is certainly a mistake somewhere, and, though we are loth to cavil at the decision arrived at, yet we feel that there is just ground for comment. As far as we can gather from the local press, the Governor's medal is awarded on the result of the examinations. The winner is to be the candidate whom the visiting examiner, after taking into consideration the marks, judges to be the best candidate of the year.' If this be so, then Miss E. Paton is undoubtedly the winner of the Governor's medal for the present year. His Lordship Bishop Verdon, addressing the students, said that the day was one of rejoicings and disappointmentsrejoicings for the successful, and disappointment for those who had not been so fortunate. However, it was a day of pleasure for all. The experience gained by the unsuccessful would, in years to come, place them amongst those crowned with success. Excellent work had been done by all. Proof of this had been shown by the splendid results of the Oxford examinations, as well as by the high distinctions gained in the music department. This year St. Dominic's again held the first place in New Zealand. The college was known throughout the Dominion for its musical successes. His Lordship said the students might well be proud _ of their school, and should thank God for the great privilege of being educated there. In conclusion he wished the pupils the happiest of happy holidays, telling them, at the same time, that he knew they would be only too pleased to resume studies on the first Monday in February, 1911.
