I regret to announce the sudden death of one of our earliest and most respected citizens, Mr. P Scally, which took place at his residence on Sunday morning, .November 0. Although Mr. Scaliy had been a great sufferer for many years, nevertheless the news of his death came as a great shock to his relatives and numerous friends. Mr. fcically had led a most strenuous life since his arrival in the colonies, and a great number of big contracts throughout New Zealand stand to his credit. He was born in JJallymena, County Antrim, seventy years ago, and when quite a boy he came out to Australia, and participated in the famous Ballarat gold rush in the sixties. Arriving in New Zealand in 1866, he took part in the several rushes at Gabriel's Gully, Addison's Flat, and Thames. After a time he left for California, and worked on some of the famous diggings there. He eventually returned to New Zealand, ana settled at Wanganui, where he became one of the foremost cattle dealers of the North Island. In 1870 he married Miss Mary Coliopy, daughter of Mr. W. Collopy, of Wanganui, and one of the earliest pioneers of that district. Mrs. Scally predeceased Mr. Scally about twelve years ago leaving two children—Mr. P. Scally, jun., of Maharahara, and Mrs. Corby, of Wellington. Amongst a great number of works carried out by him were the following: —Reclamation of land where the present Government Buildings stand in Wellington, Hutt-Wellington railway section, MakatokoMatamau section of the Napier-Wellington line (in partnership with Mr. J. Saunders). After that he was Government inspector at Matamau for the Tahoraite section of the Napier-Wellington line. He afterwards went to Napier to construct the railway across the reclamation works (in conjunction with Mr. P. McLoughlin, of Gisbome). He constructed a railway at Gisborne for the purpose of bringing stone for the building of the Gisborne breakwater. This work was also done in conjunction with Mr. McLoughlin thenl followed the construction of the Woodville section of the JNapier railway line, and the Teremakau section of the railway (in conjunction with Messrs. Gillies, Saunders, and Kelly). Later on he settled down in Woodville and took up farming as a pursuit with great success. He was a member of the Borough Council, where his practical knowledge was used to the advantage of the town. He leaves a widow, one son, and one daughter to mourn their loss, who have the sympathy of the whole district in their sorrow! liie funeral took place on Tuesday, Bth inst., and was very largely attended. The Rev. Father T. McKenna officiated at the church and also at the graveside. Mr. Scally died as he had always lived-a good Catholic-fortified by the rites of the Church. —R.I.P.
