(By telegraph from our own correspondent.) November 14. Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, V.G., who is at present in the south, is due back in Auckland at the end of the week. Rev. Father Brennan returned at the end of the week to St. Benedict's from Tauraarunui, where he had been temporarily officiating. At Devonport active preparations are going on for a bazaar and art union. to be held in December, the proceeds .to be divided between the parish and local convent funds. . His Lordship Bishop Cleary, in a letter to a friend in Rome, stated that he expected to arrive in Rome on November 1, and would leave Naples by the Orient liner Omrah on November 19. The devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration commenced at the Church of the Assumption, Onehunga, vesterday, the Very Rev. Father Mahony officiating. . Rev. Father Ormond preached the occasional sermon, and gave Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Rev. Father Buckley resumed charge of the parish of Otahuhu at the end of the past week, after an absence of several months spent in travel. Rev. Father Smiers, who temporarily had charge of Otahuhu, assisted yesterday at St. Benedict's, in the absence of the Vicar-General, and goes hence to Taumarunui. Last week, at the meeting of the Holy Family Confraternity, Rev. Father Wright gave a most interesting lecture on Anglican Orders. One hundred and fiftv-three members were present. To-morrow evening Rev. Father Vandyk will lecture on ' The Jesuits,' that much-maligned Order, and on Tuesday evening, November 22, the lecture will be by Rev. Father Venning, S.M., of Wellington. The annual entertainment of the pupils of the Marist Brothers' Pitt street, schools took place last Friday evening in St. Benedict's Hall in the presence of a large'audience including a number,of the clergy. The programme was as follows:—Choruses, ' Johan Jones,' 'The child's first grief, The tin-whistle band,' 'I heard a voice in the tranquil night A sneezing chorus,' ' Erin, the tear and the smile .' The programme concluded .with an operetta, ‘ The Bogus School Inspector,’ in which the characters were sustained by the following : Masters Percy Mullins, Fred Devaney, Roy O’Shea, Joseph Baskiville, and Walter Fairweather. The accompaniments were played by Mr. Harry Hiscocks. The pupils displayed considerable . talent, and the excellence of the entertainment plainly showed that the Brothers had bestowed unremitting attention on their training. The audience were very enthusiastic, and demonstrated by frequent applause their appreciation of the various items. ' ,

The annual meeting of the Marist Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association was held in the club room, Pitt street, last Thursday evening. The Rev. Brother Phelan (president) occupied the chair, and there were .about 50 members present, including the Rev. Father Holbrook (chaplain) and Rev. Brother George. The annual report and balance sheet, which were adopted, showed that the club was in a sound position. It was stated that fifteen debentures had. a PP^ e d f or > leaving only 100 debentures of the original 200 issued in connection with the refitting of the club. A building fund had been established with the ultimate object of building more modern club rooms. The financial ppsition was such as to justify the redeeming of 15 debentures after providing for working expenses. During the -past year 25 new members joined, the club, and ten were elected at the meeting. The Rev. Father Holbrook congratulated the club on the success it had achieved during the past year, which was in great measure due to the untiring efforts of the officers. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, his Lordship Bishop Cleary; president. Rev. Brother Phelan; working vice-president, Mr. Mahon; secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. Noonan; assistant secretary, Mr. F. Gray.

Kihi Kihi (From an occasional correspondent.) Widespread grief was felt by the people of Kihi Kihi parish at the unexpected demise on November 3, at the age of 63, of Mr. John Daniel O'Connor, who passed away at his home, The Pines,' Te Awamutu road, surrounded y £1 e ™ embers of his family and fortified by all the rites of the Church. The interment took place at Onehunga, the Very Rev. Father Mahony and Rev. Father Lynch officiating at the graveside. A large concourse of people followed the remains to the cemetery. Deceased leaves a widow and family of four young children to mourn the loss of an ideal husband and father. The late Mr. O'Connor came out from Ireland with his brother, Mr. P. O'Connor to one of the early gold rushes in Australia, and they worked together as partners on the goldfields for many years. Accumulating some capital, they came across to i rvu £® alan , d ' and purchased the large farm property, 'The Pines.' The brothers married sisters, and worked the farm in partnership with much success, the two families living together in perfect harmony in the one house—a rare tribute to the loving bonds that bound both brothers and sisters. The late Mr/O'Connor is survived 'by three brothers— Mr. Patrick O'Connor (who still occupies 'The lines ) and Messrs. Maurice and Timothy O'Connor (of Auckland). The deceased was a sterling Catholic, devoted to the interests of the Church, and a man esteemed and loved by all who knew him.—R.l. P.
