. The Very Rev. Father Brophy, of Dubbo, has been raised to the dignity of a Domestic Prelate.

His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne has contributed ten guineas towards the King Edward Memorial Fund. it ' The Right Rev. Dr. Broyer, D.D., Vicar-Apostolic of the Navigators Islands, arrived in Sydney on August 10 frorn Europe. Dr. Broyer is returning to his mission in the Navigators Islands. --- The grand total of the Roll of Honor in connection with the completion of St. Mary’s Cathedral (says the Catholic Press of August 11) is £12,950. In our last issue it was mentioned that the donations of the clergy of the archdiocese of Sydney amounted to £7850, but, with the additional sums since promised, it now stands at £B2OO. A scholarship to the value of £l2 per annum and tenable for three years has been established by the Brisbane St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Committee, and is called the • H.A.C.B. Society Metropolitan District Scholarship.’ It must be taken out at the local Christian Brothers’ School, or at the Christian Brothers’ College, Nudgee. . . The other day the Very Rev. Mgr. Barry, V.G., received a letter from his Lordship the Bishop of Sandhurst (the Right Rev. , Dr. Reville, 0.5. A.), in which his Lordship stated that both he and Dr. Corbett were then at Lourdes, and were to visit Germany to witness the Passion Play, and from there Dr. , Reville intended proceeding to Ireland. At the time of writing, July 7, both prelates were enjoying good health. " The Rev. P. J. Fitzgerald, who was stationed at Geelong for a few years, has been appointed to a parish in County Kerry. Writing to some Geelong friends, Father Fitzgerald states that he intended to set to work to build a new church. The hews of his appointment to a parish has given much satisfaction here. During his residence in Geelong he endeared himself to the Catholic people by his graciousness, tact, and kindly consideration. , V . The Rev. Fathers Meehan and Carr, of Galway, who are appealing, in Victoria for funds towards- the erection of a fine Cathedral in Galway, have collected £IOOO to date. The appeal was launched at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, about two months ago, and the first collection yielded upwards of £2OO. Since then eight other appeals have been made, and the collections each Sunday have averaged £IOO. Generous to a degree is Mr. Thomas Loughlin, of ■ V arrenheip, Ballarat (writes the Melbourne ■ correspondent of the Freeman’s Journal ' His gifts to religion charity, and education have exceeded £12,000. The Loreto Convent, Norwood (S.A:), has been given a fine property by this Knight of St. Gregory, valued at £1220. In his big Irish heart the orphan and the aged have a true friend. He has placed a beautiful altar in St. Augustine’s Boys’ Orphanage, Geelong, and paid the overdraft of £4OO. " The support that the movement to build the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, inaugurated by the Sisters of Mercy has received from all sections, irrespective of creed (writes the Brisbane correspondent of the Freeman’s Journal is a splendid, illustration of the generous and broad-minded spirit that exists here. Special efforts are at present being made to have everything in readiness for the opening ceremony on Sunday, August 14. Up to the present the amount of £17,163 has been subscribed towards the cost of the building, which is estimated at £36,000. - The Rev. Father John Gately, S.J., passed away rather suddenly on August 7at Richmond, Victoria. Father Gately was a native of County Roscommon, Ireland, and was born in 1846. He made his early studies at Summerhill College, Athlone, where he was afterwards a professor. He also studied at the Jesuit College in Limerick, and at St. Stanislaus’ College, Tullabeg. ' He completed his ecclesiastical course at Maynooth College. After some years in the secular mission he joined the-Society of Jesus in 1878 and came to Australia in 1897. News was received recently of the death by drowning of Rev. Father Biton; S.M., of the Catholic mission at Pago Pago, Samoa. Accompapied by Rev. Father Bellwald, S.M., he was returning to Lepua in an. open boat when the craft capsised. Father Bellwald succeeded in swimming to the reef, but Father Biton, who was unable to swim, quickly, disappeared. Father Biton, who was educated in France, was only a young man, and was - ordained about six years ago. He passed through Sydney just on five years ago, on his way to Samoa. The Marist Fathers labor under great difficulties in the islands, and during the past five years six young priests have met their fate by drowning. v
