The death is reported of Professor Goldwin Smith, who passed away at Toronto, Canada, at the age of 87 years. The deceased, who was born at Reading, England, had a distinguished University career, winning a large number of prizes. He was called to the English bar in 1847, and from 1858 till 1866 was regius professor of modern history at Oxford. He was a prominent champion of the north daring the American Civil War, in 1864. In 1868 he went to the United States, and became honorary professor of English and constitutional history in the Cornell University. Three years later he went to Canada, and resided in Toronto ever since. Professor Smith was a prominent exponent of the idea that Canada is destined to merge her political life in that of the United States. He was the author of a large number of publications dealing with various subjects. In February last he broke his thigh, and for a time he was in a critical condition. Messrs. McNab and Mason, monumental sculptors, Symonds street, Auckland, are prepared to supply memorials to any part of New Zealand. All the marble work in St. Patrick’s Cathedral was supplied by this firm.
