Cromwell

(From an occasional correspondent.)

The annual convent school concert took place on Wednesday evening of last week in the Athenaeum Hall before a large audience. As usual, the various musical items by the pupils (past and present) were exceptionally well rendered, and reflected the highest credit on the Sisters, and displayed the splendid musical training the pupils receive at their hands/ ""An operetta, ' The Dolls' House,' was splendidly staged, and was a spectacular treat. The ribbon drill by the boy pupils was executed with 'marvellous precision, but the gem of the evening was the Indian clubs by the boys, who, to the splendid accompaniment of Miss Ivy Mitchell (a past pupil), fairly brought down the house, airl they were^ vociferously encored. It is hard to conceive that the lads were trained by the Sisters; had they been trained by a skilled gymnast they could not have gone through the drill better. They kept accurate time to Miss

Ivy Mitchell's perfect accompaniment. Throughout the evening's entertainment . this young lady displayed remarkable proficiency, and does credit to the Sisters of the Cromwell School, where she was educated. The entertainment concluded with a farce, 'Their New Paying Guest.' The cast was as follows : Mrs. Loveday (a widow), Miss Maud Mitchell; Grace "and" Lucy (her daughters), Misses K. Thomas and Martha Mitcheil; Miss Hardcastle (paying guest), Miss M. Cahill; Mary (the maid). Miss Frances Hayes. All were letter-perfect, and filled their respective roles admirably. Special- mention must be, made of Miss F. Hayes, who, as a pert housemaid, acted the part as to the manner born. During the interval Mr. E. Murrell (Mayor) thanked the audience for their patronage and the performers for their services. The door prize — a splendid oil painting of Preservation Inlet — was drawn and- won by Mrs. Thomas Hayes. The Sum of £30 was realised from the sale of tickets.
