DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

A sale of work in aid of the funds of the school will be opened in the Sacred Heart School, North-East Valley, on Wednesday, »July 14. There was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday from the 11 o'clock Mass until Vespers, after which the usual procession took place." The St. Joseph's Harriers held their run from the St. Clair Baths on Saturday. There was a fair muster, and the members, iir charge of Deputy-captain Swanson, ran along the hills at the back of St. Clair, until reaching the Cattleyards. A winding course was then taken over an easy stretch of level country in the direction of the caves. The runners then headed for home along the cliffs and past Cargill's Castle. There was a good attendance at the usual weekly meeting of St. Joseph's Men's Club on Friday evening, when a debate on the stoppage of the Lawrence-Roxburgh railway took place. The arguments on both sides were well delivered, and some excellent speeches were made. On a vote being taken, the action of the Government in discontinuing the works was upheld. Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., presided, and at the conclusion of the debate gave an interesting description of the Roxburgh district and its immense possibilities for fruit-growing purposes. The St. Patrick's Young Men's Club, South Dunedin, held its usual weekly meeting on Wednesday evening, June 30, when there was a large attendance. The programme consisted of musical items, and a very pleasant evening was spent. The Rev. Father O'Malley presided. The following contributed items : Pianoforte solo, Miss Cunningham ; songs, Misses L. Fitzpatrick, A. Heffernan, M. Mahoney, and Messrs. W. Tonar, J. Walsh, A. Heffernan, W. Ahem, and J. Mac Donal d; exhibition of club-swinging, Miss Brennan; recitation, Mr. W. Mulrooney; cornet solo, Mr. Jas. Keyes; violin solo, Mr. A. Ahem. Miss A. Heffernan acted as accompanist. A meeting of those interested in forming a ladies' hockey club was called for June 29 in St. Joseph's Hall. Considering the unsettled state of the weather, and the many counter attractions, the meeting was well attended. The Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., presided, and Miss M. Munro was appointed secretary to the meeting. It was unanimously decided to form a ladies' hockey club. His Lordship the Bishop has kindly consented to act as patron. Miss Heley was unanimously elected president. Misses Rogers and Bourke were elected vice-presidents. There were a number of nominations for the committee, the successful candidates being Misses Brennan, Layburn, Laffey, Drury, and Sweeney. Miss J. Duhig was elected captain, Miss Brennan vice-captain, and Miss Marion Munro secretary. It was decided that the uniform for playing members should consist of a white cap, with green shamrock on front panel, a white or cream blouse, with a shamrock on the pocket, emerald green tie, and navy blue or black skirt. The suggestion that it be called the Faugh-a-Ballah Club was adopted with acclamation. It is to be hoped that if the members practise assiduously for the remainder of the year, they will prove themselves worthy of the name they have chosen. The thanks of the members are due to Rev. Brother Brady for the great interest he has taken in the club, for the valuable assistance and advice he has given, and also for having made arrangements for the marking out of the ground and the erecting of goal-posts thereon. Thanks are also due to several gentlemen who have given donations to the funds. The members will, weather permitting, hold their first practice at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, at their ground in Caversham. Enough members being available, , a Wednesday team will be formed in connection with the Saturday one -already in existence.
