DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(By Telegraph from our own correspondent.) .July 5. The late manifesto of the Anglican Laymen's League has apparently missed its mark. It is reported that a new Order of nuns is about to he established here, and that they are seeking a suitable site upon which to s erect a convent. Great satisfaction is expressed in Auckland at Rev. . Father Venning's timely answer to Chief Justice Stout' 3 remarks with regard to denominational schools in the Dominion. The question of unemployment is felt in Auckland. Much remunerative works await execution, but necessary loans having been anticipated already a halt was called for the time being, which at the present juncture is most unfortunate.

Rev. Father Holbrook assumed the position of prieut in charge at the Cathedral on July 1. Rev. Father Meagher commenced his duties as assistant priest at Parnell on the same day. Rev. Father Curran, who has been transferred from Thames to St. Benedict's, arrived on Saturday. Rev. Father Tigar, 0.P., assumed charge of Thames last week. Exposition of the- Blessed Sacrament took place after the last Mass at the Cathedral yesterday, and was continued throughout the afternoon until Vespers. The high altar was beautifully decorated. His Lordship the Bishop presided at Vespers, and Very Rev. Father Keogh, of Wellington, preached an impressive sermon on the Blessed Sacrament. Dealing with the mystery of Transubstantiation, he showed it was in process all round us. Tho preacher then gave several illustrations explanatory o£ the subject of his discourse. The works of the great, masters, particularly Michael Angelo, he used with telling effect to bring home to the congregation an idea of the stupendous miracle which was bo far beyond the greatest minds the world had ever produced. The sermon was an intellectual treat, and at its conclusion there was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament. The Bishop was celebrant, Rev. Father Holbrook deacon, and Rev. Father Wright subdeacon. Pontifical Benediction followed. The choir, under Mr. Hiscocks, rendered the music in a finished manner. Very Rev. Father Keogh left this morning on a short visit to Rotorua, whence he returns again to Auckland prior to leaving to take up the duties of- pastor of Hastings.
