' What is your trade ?' said the lawyer to the witness. ' Platelayer,' replied the man. The lawyer asked him a host of other questions, then harked hack again to the subject of his employment. ' I understand you work on the railway, my man?' 'Oh, no, I don't,' replied the* witness. ' But you just said you did,' persisted the lawyer. ' Beg your pardon, I never said anything about the railway.' ' Come, come, don't trifle with the court, my man. You said you were a platelayer.' ' Well,' replied the witness, imperturbably, ' isn't a waiter a platelayer ?'
