(From our own correspondent.) . ' - February 10. Mr. and Mrs. F. Neylon left Wanganui on Wednesday last en route to Europe. Ihey expect to be .absent from Wanganui for about six months. The mission at St. .Joseph's Church, Aramoho, was very successful, large numbers of people having attended all the services. The church was crowded on Sunday evening week when the Very Rev. Father Clune, C.SS.R., conducted the closing ceremonies. On Sunday week t the members of St. Mary's Catholic Club approached the Holy Table in a body at St. Mary's .Church. Last Friday evening teams representing St. Mary's Club and the local lodge, of Druids, played a euchre match at Hodson's Rooms, which resulted in a victory for the Club. The Catholio schools re-opened last week. Referring to the matter yesterday and on the previous Sunday, the Very Rev. Dean 4 G-rogan said that the Catholics of Wanganui had good reason to be proud of their schools, as the Wanganui Convent held the first place for results, and the Marist Brothers' school, too, had been ' very successful. He pointed out that at Home, in Australia, in other parts of New Zealand, as well as in Wanganui, wherever the pupils of the Uatholic schools met the children of other schools in even competition the \ictory always remained with the Catholic children. The Dean also explained the two reasons of this superiority. In .the first place in the Catholic schools the knowledge off God! and of the truths which. He has- revealed was imparted to the children whose minds were thus enlightened, whereas in secular schools the children were taught nothing about God, and their minds were thus cramped and dwarfed for want of this knowledge. In the second place teachers belonging to the religious Orders took a deeper interest in the' welfare of their pupils than lay teachers, and consequently devoted more time to their advancement in learning. With regard to the Wanganui Catholic schools your correspondent is in a position, from an experience extending over many years, both as a parent and an examiner'K> endorse the encomiums passed upon them by the Dean, and to state with confidence that these schools are, m all that pertains to true education, superior to the other institutions of their kind in Wanganui At the recent Junior Civil Service Examination, five candidates from, the Convent soh, oiol passted, all of them with credit The Marist Brothers presented four candidates, ail ot whom passed, one being in the credit list At the recent scholarship examinations in connection" with i Kf ™ - S . Collc S e > Master Gerald Mahony, a pupil of the Marist Brothers, secured one of the scholarships
