SACRED HEART CONVENT HIGH SCHOOL, CHRISTCHURCH

The annual entertainment and prize distribution in connection with the' above, conducted by the religious of Notre Dame des Missions, was held on Monday afternoon, Decembes 16, In the unavoidable absence of his Lordship the Bishop, the Very Rev. Dean Ginaty, S.M., presided. Other clergy present were the Very Rev. Father Marnane, Rev. Fathers Hyland, O'Connell, and Peoples. There was a large attendance of friends and parents of the children, who thoroughly enjoyed the excellent entertainment. A pretty little drama in two acts, entitled 'St. Philoaratna's Play,' was staged with' due regard to scenery, etc., each act being interspersed with musical selections. The young performers acquitted themselves admirably. The following was the cast of characlexs :_st. The following report on the various examinations held during ,the year 1907 was read :— Teacher's D. Certificate Examination— Three candidates passed, one obtaining a full certificate and two partial certificates. - Matriculation.— One candidate passed. Civil Service.— Three candidates "passed. Annual School Examination, held in June.— Fourteen candidates obtained ProficiencyCertificates in VI Standard. Music Examinat : bi>s. Two " candidates were successful in passing the examination in the art of teaching, in connection with the Trinity College, London, thus gaining the letters A.T.C.L. Three succeeded in passing the Practical examination in . the * same College as Certificated Pianists. At the Industrial International Exhibition, which closed in April, "many 'of the pupils were successful in gaining medals, two of which were gold, for their various exhibits in oil painting, modelling, art needlework, Church embroidery, • and Kensington enibroidery or-j>in work,. Four pupils "also gained Exhibition prizes at the Competition in' Essay Writing on ' Cruelty to Animals,' and' were highly' commended Jor- the style .and- neatness of their w,ork.* ' ' - the distribution of ' prizes ihe Very Rev. The exhibition of work was as usual varied arid of ;a high class, and representative of the useful and orna-

mental. There were to be seen some very fine paintings in oil and water colors, sketches in bladk'and white, crayon drawings, artistic modelling in composition," art needlework-, various specimens of '^wood work, carving, etc:, and a good display of fancy work in its many branches. Most interesting, too, was the kindergarten section, where little hands had, fashioned and finished many, charming articles, whilst plain sewing had evidently re- ( ceived much close attention. - ._ _ ' ' ' The following was the prize list :—: — Good conduct (presented by his Lordship the Right Rev.
