SACRED HEART COLLEGE, AUCKLAND

The annual distribution of prizes of the Sacred Heart College, Richmond-road took place on the evening of December 11, in. the presence of a large number of "visitors, including his Lordship Bishop Len.lun, and Rev. Fatheis Tormey, Murphy, Farthing, and Bradley. Ihe first part of the programme was devoted to concert items, which were much enjoyed. The opening number was 'Un Ballo in Maschera,' which was j.Lued by the orchestra. Recitations were given by Masters C. Carroll,- ' David and Absalom,' and ' Old Ireland I bid you the top of the morning,' and L. G rims tone, * Caoch O'Lcary, 1 and the ' Bells of Shandon ' ; \ iolin solos, Masters H. Quinn, ' Un Soir a Portici,' and D. O'Connor, ' 11 Trovatore 1 ; Master B. Hartman sang ' Sweet spirit, hear my prayer,' and an action song, ' The jovial auctioneer,' was rendered in capital stjle b5 r Masters B. Nelson, G-. Tole, A. Sheath, and B. Hiartman. The chorus, ' In the lonely vale of streams,' was rendered by the students, and Mr. Montague, by special request, gave a couple of historical recitations. This concluded the programme, and the Brother Superior then read the annual report, which stated that a most successful yeir's work had teen accomplished. The students who went up for the Civil Service and matriculation examinations last year acquitted themselves with distinction, 11 passing the jurior Civil Service Examination, and four the matriculation One student also succeeded in passing the seiror Civil Service examination. The largest number of boarders at the college during the year was forty-nine. The BMiop gave a brief address and consrratul iteel the Brothers and the boys on the success that had been achieved.
