The ceremony of blessing the foundation stone of the new presbytery at Euroa (diocese of Sandhurst) was performed on Sunday, September 1, by the Right Rev. Mgr. Davy, V.G., assisted by the' Very Rev. John Ryan, S.J., and Rev. T. O'Reilly. Mr. Joseph Hicks, a native of Wicklow, who went to the Forest Creek diggings 52 years ago with his wife, and has ever since resided at Winter's Flat, Castlemaine (Vie), has celebrated his 101 st birthday- He relates incidents that occurred 90 years ago. The Very Rev. J. O'Dwyer, pastor of Turnup who is , also the Vicar-General of the Goulbum diocese, received a very enthusiastic welcome home, after a trip to Europe. Father O'Dwyer was presented with an address and a purse of sovereigns. Mr. R. F. Millane, the young Irish-Australian, has for some weeks been at work at the Williamstown Naval Depot perfecting a new torpedo he has invented. Recently the completed weapon was taken -out in the torpedo boat, and private trials of its running made with most successful results. Right Rev. Mgr. Treacy's silver jubilee was celebrated with great rejoicing in Deniliquin. ,At : a large . gathering, presided over by Mr. M. J. Carew, an illuminated address and purse of 125 sovereigns were presented to Monsignor Trcacy, 'accompanied by the hope that God would abundantly bless the recipient in the future in his zealous work for the welfare of his people., The Brisbane District. The funeral fund now stands ' £1000 better than last year, and - there is an increase of 349 in the membership. There are now 30 male and six female branches under the jurisdiction of the district. At the annual meeting of , the Royal Humane •-" Society (says the 'Catholic Press '), the usual medals and certificates for deeds of bravery were presented- by Miss Rawson. Edward Burke was awarded a silver medal for saving life, and bronze medals and certificates were awarded to Eileen Kelly (aged 14), and' Senior-constable Michael Farrell. Totals, 14,071 males, 1242 females. Grand total, 15,313. The death is reported of 'Dr. Joseph Lalor, at his residence, Church street, Richmond (Victoria).' Deceased, who was in his 48th year, was the only son of the late Mr. Peter Lalor, whose name has figured prominently in the history of Victoria, first as a prominent mover in the Eureka Stockade, and later as a member of the Victorian Parliament. Dr. Lalor was born at Sandridge, and after having received his early education at St. Patrick's College, was sent, when ab- ' out 15 years of age, to Ireland. Subsequently he went to Belgium, and graduated' as a Doctor of Medicine at the Brussels University. On. his return to Melbourne Jn 1883 . he practised medicine at RichmondThe golden jubilee of Catholicism in Dubbo was celebrated with great rejoicing on ' Sunday, September 1. His Eminence Cardinal Moran and the Bishops of Bathurst and Goulburn were present on the occasion. On his arrival the previous day the Cardinal was presented with an address from the -Municipal Council,after being welcomed 'tiy the' Mayor, Addresses were, also presented to his _ Eminence from the clergy and ■ laity of the district. On Sunday, morning the recent additions to the church were blessed, after which High Mass was celebrated, the occasional sermon' being, preached by his Eminence.,.
