(From our own correspondent.) September 13. The weekly meeting of the Catholic Young Girls' Club was held on Tuesday evening last, when there was a very large attendance. - Reporting on his recent examination of the Waipawa Catholic school, the Inspector says : — 'The school

has made commendable progress in the term ; work and children alike .show good intelligence. The style is good, and the results are of good promise.' The devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration was , commenced last Sunday at Hastings. Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, of Meanee, preached on Sunday" evening, and. Rev. Father. Goggan, of Napier, .on Monday evening, both being very fine serirons. Through the courtesy of the Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, the Meanee Observatory will be open to the public fora fortnight from Monday, September lfi, for the purpose of allowing visitors to view the moon through his fine telescope. The moon will, during that time, be in -an excellent position for observation. The children attending the Catholic schools at Hastings presented Very Rev. Dean Smyth, on the occasion of his birthday, with a small purse of sovereigns for church purposes, and a beautiful set of Stations of- the Cross in oils, the gifts of twelve mem-* bers of the congregation. Master P. McCarthy read an address of congratulation, after which Miss Zita Potham made the presentation. Dean Smyth, in a feeling* reply, thanked all concerned for their gift to the" church, and granted the .children a holiday for the day. A very successful progressive euchre party was held last night week in the Oddfellows' Hall, : Waipukurau. The function, which was in aid of the Catholic Church debt fund, was largely patronised. The prizes were won by Mrs. Stevens and Mr. Ryan. After the presentation of prizes, a short musical programme was gone through, "Che following contributing : Miss Hannon, pianoforte solo ;'.'* Misses Mitten, M. and K. Coe, and Benson, and O'Flaherty, Cain, and Brophy, songs. Mrs. Stevens and Misses Eccleton and ' Hannon played the accompaniments. Mr. Carroll gave a very fine recitation. Refreshments were provided by the ladies.
