(From our own correspondent.) August 16; Inspector McDonnell has been granted three months' holiday to recuperate after his prolonged illness. Inspector Dwyer, of Christchurch, is bo act in his stead. The parish social, which was arranged to be held in the Garrison Hall on August 21, has, on "account of the improvements Uettng effected in that building, been unavoidably postponed till August 28, and will be held in the Gaiety Theatre. The Young Men's Club held their weekly debate last night, the .subject being, ' Urb'aa life v. city life.' Messrs. R. Willis and M. Brojhy supported urban life, while Messrs. P. Evans and G. Sinden expressed their views in favor of city life. The Catholic Young Ladies' Club held their weekly meeting on Tuesday evening. Songs were rendered by the Misses L. Vickers, Evans (2), and V. Higgins ; ■pianoforte solos by the Misses Blcasel, Coe (2), M. iSinden, and J. Bailey ; recitations by the Misses Goldfinch and Griffin, while Miss N. Evans was responsible for a humorous reading. The comet, which has been troubling the astronomers of late, has had the effect of rousing numbers of persons from their peaceful slumbers in the early hours of the morning, but the conditions have not been favorable, on account of the dull and cloudy weather. Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, of the Meanee Seminaiv and Qb,serv3ito/ry, has stated that it will be visLla in the evening ir about a fortnight's time. A euchre tournament was hefd on Monday evening in St. Patrick's Hall between the Napier^ and Hastings Catholic Young Men's Clubs. Twenty-five of the Hastings members were present, and they wen the tournament by 20 games to 16. After the games supper was handed round by lady friends, and then the assemblage adjourned for music. Songs were contributed by Messrs. J. Hughes, P\ Vickers, J. Donovan, W. O'Donoghue, L. Mahony, M. Brophy,- and R. Willis. Messrs. Farrelly, O'Shea, G. Sinden, J. W. Coc and Rev. Father Quinn ga^e recitations, and Mr. E. Mullaney a step-dance. The accompaniments for the vocal items were played by Miss O'Rourke, and Messrs. Hughes and Mahony. F,ather Quinn, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Napier Club for their hospitality, and extrnded an invitation to them to return the visit, and engage in a, .debate. Father Goggan accepted the invitation.
