It is pleasing to note that in. the Friendly Societies' competition- for a shield for the best teem of euchre players, the Hibernians are leading, having as yet not been defeated. The quarterly Communion of the members of the Hibernian and Literary Societies took place on Sunday last", when a very large number of both societies approached the Holy Table. A concert was held by the Literary Society some time ago to 'assist, in paying oiff the debentures on' the piano.' Although the night was wet, a large audience was present, and the proceeds helped to reduce the debt to a considerable extent. The Catholic Literary Society has lost the services of two of its most valued members, namely Messrs. P. Healy and T. Brophy. Mr. Healy has severed his connection with the Farmers' Co-operative Association, and has taken up a position at Lincoln, whilst Mr. Brophy has been transferred to the post office at "Oamaru. . Before their daparture each' was the recipient of! a hlandsome travelling rue; from the soeietv. Mr. Healy also received at a public meeting a gold watch and chain.
