Wellington, August 20.— The Department of Industues and Commerce has received the following cable from Hie High Commissionei, dated London, August 18 •— ' Trade for all classes of mutton is very slow the last cabled advices being hardly maintained except for hglit-weight carcases. (Ltd.) report :— We held our weekly auction tale of grain and produce at our stores on Monday, when a lengthy catalogue was met with moderate competition from the usual trade buyers. For seveial of the lines on oner bidding di-d not come up to owners' reserves or our valuations ; these liad therefore to be passed in, but a fair proportion of the catalogue found buyers at valuations. Potatoes.— Good table sorts, both Derwents and white potatoes, a ie in fair demand at £11 to £12 per ton. Medium lines have not the same inqwiiy but are saleable at £!) in s to £10 10s. Inferior soits and small Derwents have little inquiiy at £7 to £fl. Seed lines, specially picked and well-shaped tubers, aie in good demand at £12 to £13 10s per ton (sacks included). Chafi'.— Heavier supplies have come foiward, many of which are of only moderate quality. but piime oaten sheaf has much atliaction for local buyeis, Hut, all chaff a-nswenng this desciiption is readily dealt with, while lower giades are almost unsaleable.
