ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

(From our own correspondent.) August 18. The members of the St. Patrick's College Old Boys Association are to entertain the present pupils at. a social evening in the college on Tuesday next. Oul schools were examined this week by the Board's Inspector. The reports are not yet to hand but the results are, 1 understand, as favorable as ever. 1 His Grace the Archbishop left on Friday for Patea where he is to administer Confirmation. It is probable that he will be absent from the city for about a fortnight, during which he will be engaged in visiting the country districts. The usual monthly soci ftr evening, organised by the South Wellington Ladies' Altar .Society, was held in the schoolroom on Thursday evening. A very pleasant time was spent in a progressive euchre tournament and wnn soii& and music by a large number of parishioneis and iiiends,. The iepiesentati\es of the (latholic( l atholic Young Men's Lit ciary and Debating Society defeated the representatives oi the \ivian stieet Baptist Society in the first contest foi (he tournament, ai ranged by the Wellington LiU'iaLy and Debating Societies' Union. The debate took pUce in the Baptist schoolroom on Monday evening. r iiie Rev. J. ,J. _\oith presided, and Mr J W loynion (Public Trustee) acted as judge. After a close and inteiesting competition the representatives of the i atholic Club secured the veidici. The members of the team, Messrs. S. J. Moian, Kane, and J Fitzgerald aie to be congratulated on their win. The weather was unfortunately far tiom favorable and this to a great extent militated against the attendance. Those who biaved the elements weie, however, accorded a very fine ticat. When the organ was first installed Mr. Towsey gave the opening recital, and il was in keeping with the fitness ot things that his last public recital before leaving the l olony should have been on the same fine instrument over the possibilities of which he has displayed such great contiol.
