Wellington, July 30.— The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable 'from the Hiy,h Commissioner, dated London, July 28 :— ' The mutton man.et is dull, and trade of al< classes is very slow, pi ices being barely maintained. Average price, light weight Canterbury brancls, :isd ; heavy weights, 3^d. Be&t quality North Island mutton is quoted at -Ud, whilse second class quality is selling at :^d. ' Wheat.— The market is quiet, but firm at late quotations, which are as follows -—Prime milling, 3s 5d to 3s Gd ; prime Tuscan, 3s 7d ; medium milling!;, 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; best whole fowl wheat, 3s Id to 3s 2d ; broken and damaged, 2s <)d to 3s per bushel. Potatoes.— The market continues very firm, there being a good enquiry for seed lines, especially ' Up-to-dates ' and ' British Queens.' Quotations : Seed lots £11 10s to £12 10s ; extra choice picked, £13 ; prime Dcrwents, £10 ins to £11 10s ; medium to good, £9 5s to £10il0s; inferior and faulty, £7 to £'9 ncr ton. ' Chaff.— The market is fairly well supplied, medium and inferior being much harder to place than prim© samples. (Ltd.) report :— We held our weeMv auction sale of grain and produce at our stores on Monday. Our catalogue was a

large one, bsut with good competition from local buyers, a fair proportion of the lots forward changed hands at> satisfactory prices. Values ruled as under :— Oats.— So far as the export trade is concerned, the past week has been exceptionally quiet, and sales have been confined to small quantities, for coastal orders. These have been supplied on the basis of late quotations. Consignments coming forward are on a smaller scale, and owners are not readily disposed to reduce reserves. Quotations : Prime milling, 2s 3id to 2s 4d' , good to best feed, 2s 2id to 2s 3d ; inferior to medium, 2s to 2s 2d ; seed lines, 2s 5d to 2s 9d per bushd (sacks extra). Wheat.— Prime to choice milling samples are readily taken by millers at late quotations. Medium qualities are not so readily dealt with, although buyeis are more disposed to make an exception in the case of Tuscan if in fairly sound condition. Lines in indifieruit condition or badly mixed as regards size have not nearly the same attention.
