• St. Joseph's Harriers met at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, as the guests of ,the rector, on Saturday. A course was taken tc wards Wingatui, but keeping well to the left of the racecou.rse till the hills were reached, then turning to the right, and came home through the racecourse. The country was \ery slippery, and many were the spills. During the run the Civil Service hares were met. On returning lo the college, the rev. rector supplied refreshments, -which weie enjoyed by all, in the spacious dining room. _ A very enjoyable entertainment in aid of the school fumls was given in the N<orth->East ValLey schoolroom on, Wednesday evening of last week in the presence of a large audience. r l he first part of the entertainment consisted of items of vocal and instrumental music, and recitations, nearly every one of which was encored. The following was the programme : — Overture, ' Castagnette,' Miss M. King ; scng, 'My life for thee,' Mr. A. Cook ; scng, ' As yoarf hair grows whiter,' Mrs. T. King; recitation, ' The soldien's pardon,' Mr. J. Mill ; comic song, 'My inq'uisiti.e kiddie,' Mr. C. Budge; song, 'Promise of life,' Mrs. K. Power ; song, ' Queen of the earth,' lUr. (}. 11. Clarkson; redtatu n, ' Beautiful snow,' Mrs. W. Pollaid ; song, ' TII3 Yeoman s weeding,' Mr. P. Caro]in ,1 song, ' When in the twilight,' Miss R. Clarkson ; song, ' Star of my sou],' Mr. A. Cook ; duot , ' Nocturne,' Mrs. T. King and Mr. P. Carolin. 'I he second part consisted of a very amusing farce, entitled ' John Dobbs,' the following being the cast of characters : Mr. Paternoster, Mr. C. Budge ; Squire Fallowfield, Mr. J. Hill ; John Dcbbs, Mr. A. Cook ; Ma or Franklin, Mr. J. Mulholland ; John, Mr. \V. Keany ; Lucy Fallowfield, Miss J. Drummond ; Mrs. ( hesterton, Mrs. W. Pollard. The piece was admirably played, notwithstanding that the performers labored under the disad\antages of want of scenery and a too limited stage. Miss M. King accompanied the singers in a very capable manner. On the whole the entertainment was one of the best given for some tirrve in th? North-East Valley.
