St. T idore, Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor. St. Isidore, theologian and chronicler, was born at Carthagena in Spain, of which his father Severianus was prefect. He was a brother of Fulgentius of Carthagena and of St. Leander of Seville, succeeding the latter as bishop (600). He presided .it tin* Syicdf of Seville and Toledo, in 619 and 633. lie was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1828. Isidore was undoubtedly the greatest man and most' erudite scholar of his time ll is most important work, entitled, ' Originim she Etihiyinvologiarum Libri XX.,' is a kind of encyclopaedia of the arts and sciences then known. His other works deserving mention are "Clironicon,' or history of the world, from the Creation to the year 626 ; a ' Chronicon,' or history of the Visigoths, from A.D. 172 to 628 ; amd a' ' Book o>f Ecclesiastical. Writers,' a continuation of a similar work composed by St. Jerome and Gemnndius, to which he added the names of thirtythree other authors. The collection of canons, formerly ascribed to him, is not his work. With St. Isidore closes the line of the Latin Fathers of the Church. St.. Sixtnis 1., Pope and Martyr. St./ Sixttis 1., who was Pope from 117 to »127, was bom at Rome, where he suffered martyrdom under Hadrian.
