CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' SCHOOL, DUNEDIN.

Hie annual entertainment by, and distribution of prizes to, the pupils of the Christian Brothers' SchoolDunetiiti, took place in His Majesty's Theatre on Tuesday ovenihg. The pupils of the Christian Brothers' are noteti for tine excellence of their entertainments, and are consequently favored with very large audiences This no doubt accounted for tihe splendid attendance on the prosemt occasion, and it is neddless to say tfrat the- expectations of the audience were more than realised, as the programme was a most enjoyable one, and thoroughly appreciated by those present. His Lordship Bishop Yerflidn presided, and there wore also present the local clergy. The following was the programme :— Overture,, by the Orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. E. Eae-ar class 3qng, < The' huntsman's chorus ' ; musical drill* jtfnror squaid ; recitation, ' Cardinal Wolsey's soliloquy '■ Master T. Laffey ; song, ' Ring on, sweet Angeßus' f - Master W. O'Connor ; cadet display, Christian Brothers^ Defemce Oorjps, under the direction of Captain Bussey - scejnes from ' Hamlet,' in which the characters were taJkem by Masters R. Burke, B. Connor, L. Miss, Clara Huigjh e s actdd a;s accompanist. At the conclusion of the programme Rev. Brother Braidy read the anarual repfort, after Which his Lordship the Bislhop distributed the prizes. The following was the report :-— It affonds me great pleasure to place before ybfc a sihort report of the school year so happily terminate)! this evening. In every respect it has been a highly successful ane. It was a great source of gratification to the Brothers to notice the steady increase in the sdh'ool attendance during the year, the average attendance Dor tfhe past three months being ffie highest for this year, and donsiderably higher tin an the corresponding period of any other year since 1900. The regularity o£ the? children's attendance thrcJug'hdut tihe year has been all tihat Cduid be desired. This healthy increase, both in regard t(o numibers awl regular attendance, plainly sjltow.^ tflie earnestness of otir people to give their children a sioMnd religious alid secular education. Good parents kmow well tihiat a s,ound religious education is of the utmost importance to the welfare of their children. They know that it will induce the cultivation of mloral excellence, which is the very ground work of all eternal frapp imess and material accomplishments. In prosperity, a religious education will provide a youth with a steady head and wisdom, and in adversity, will give him a sufficient elevation of mind, and self-reliamce wlhich will an\a/hle him to overcome all difficulties. While attaching great importance to the religious educatibjn of our p|upils, it m,ust not be understood that the secHiliar stjudies are neglected. Religious education is like a Watchful mother, which has Tor its object not excellence in this department or that, but embraces the chikl himself, and nothing that concerns Jiis happiness is too low for her tio sfcoop to. If tlhere be anyone whd thinks we have devoted too miuch time to this side of

the cJiiW's qducation, the University and Civil Service results of years past, together with the marked successes wtfuah nuntbeis of our old boys have won for themselves in the arena of public life, ought to entirely disabuse (him of that error. The physical training of Our boys ia a strong feature of our school, ajid this- vear rQITr QI T l o^ T Ovk was done Mr - J - °- Smith for "the lirst Half of the year, and under Master J. Bryiant for the second half. I record with pleasure the close application of the pupils— senior a'n-d junior— to their 6-tuijUes. Un the athletic field our boys hiave been singularly successSul. At the Sqhaols' Championship Sports held at tine beginning of this yea-r, t*he boys carried off 22 medals qufc of 42 presemtod by the Ota,go Cent-ie. This js a recjord of wihich any school might be proud Tjhey are, moreover, premiers in School Senior Football for last seasiom, premiers in Schools Senior Cricket for seascjn 19,03-^Ol, a»nd in this year's competition have buffered up defeat. O\ur pupils were moreover very Successful at tihe Duncdi'n Elocutionary Competitiqns, carrying off twf) flrsHj p;ri,/:Qs and two second prizes in the three events qpetn to sichool children. A great deal of this success can be attributed to the enthusiasm infused into every (department of school life, by the oontplete renov, atiqn of the schools during the early part of tne year We,are deejply indebted to his Lordship the Bisihop and his 'devoted people for their great generosity in this mjattqr. Their whole-heartodness in undertaking the 'heavy expenditure required to renovate the Brokers' Siquse and schools, ? .,n'd their generosity in meeting tjhrit expenditure so willingly, are to us a signal proof of the zeal and deMoteciness of his Lords'hjp and his generous pqqple to the sacred cause of Catholic education We retimta c*ur sincere thanks to one and all for their lifaecal support durung the year. It would be itliflicult to fmid worids t)o express our gratitude to the Rev. Father Murphy and the other zealous priests of St. J-osefph's for the practical interest they have at all times taken m promoting the success of our schools. r l\his year s<aw tihe establishment of a Defence Cadet Corps m connection with the school under the able management of Captain T. Hjugsey. I may here state tjhat Mr. Uusscy fras been a mighty factor in promoting the welfare of our school arid extending its Sphere of useful work. Four of our boys passe,d the public examinations since last yjear,, <a LOO per cent, of passes being obtained h\ the Civil Service examination.
