ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

(From our own correspondent.) May 14. I am pleased to report an improvement in the condition of Mr. Cumin. The Very Rev. Father Lewis, V.Gh, has been spending a few days with his former parishioners in Blenheim. A large number of bluejackets from 11. M.5. 'Psyche' attended Mass at the Sacred Heart Basilica on Sunday last. The Rev. Father Duffy, of Pahiatua, is still dangerojusly ill. He has been attended by Dr. CahiH, of Wellington. The Rev. Father O'Hallohan, of Kumara, left during the week for Auckland on his way Home. A large num--ber of West Coasters were present on the wharf to bid him farewell. The Rev. Father Hickson commenced the collection of funds for the new Cathedral in the parish of Te Aro oin Sunday last. During the week a house to house visit was made by Father Hickson in company with Fathers O'Shea and Moloney. So far their efforts have proved successful. Thorndon parish will be visited next and after it the parish of Wellington South. The weekly meeting of the Catholic Yolung Men's Literary Society was held on Monday evening. The president, Rev. Fattier Kimbell, S.M., presided. The meeting was one of the most enthusiastic and most largely attended yet held. Each member present had either to give a reading, a recitation, or make an impromptiu speech. The first debate of the season will take place on Monday evening, the subject chosen being ' The desirability, or otherwise, of the introduction of Chinese labor into the Rand.' A letter was received from the secretary of the V.M.C.A. asking for the cooperation of the Catholic Club in a movement to form a union of the various literary societies in the city. A meeting to consider the scheme is to be held next week, at which Messrs. A. H. Casey, P. J. Moran, and J. McGowan will represent as delegates the Catholic Literary Society. The Executive of the Federated Catholic Young Men's Societies of New Zealand met on Friday evening. In reply to a letter addressed to the hon. general secretary of the second Australasian Catholic Congress, the following communication was received from the secretary, Dr. A. L. Kenny :— Dear Sir,— Your favor of the 30tn ult. is just to hand, -and I hasten to reply. In my opinion it will be of great value to your Federation to send two delegates to our Congress, there will be a gain to yourselves and to us. Further, we will most gladly receive from your societies papers on the Federation and your Magazine. The Victorian Catholic Young Men's Societies are arranging a two days' meeting of the Catholic Young Men's Societies' delegates, during and in connection with the Congress. I will see that they communicate with you on the matter. I know that his Eminence the Cardinal and our Archbishop will be very glad to see the C.V.M. Societies taking an active part in the Congress. The Union Steam Ship Company are giving a ten per cent, reduction in fares, and I expect to get the New Zealand Railways to give return tickets at single fares from the interior to ports.' In view of the above the Executive will endeavor to send two delegates to the Congress and funds for this purpose are now being raised-
