The new church at 'Balfour is nearrn'g completion, and the dedication ceremony will probably take place in afaotit-a month's time. The Irish Athletic Society of Southland has every reaSbW $o ' be proad of the success that attended this year's sports gathering. Nothwithstariding several draw-backs a substantial balance has been secured 1 . Farmers in quest of good land still continue to inspect the Edendale Estate, and by the time winter is over little erf this well-known property is expected to be un-selecte)d, The Athletic Football Club, Invercaxgill, halve in ■hand the formation of a debating siociety, intended principally for. members- -of.. the Club, but all others having a taste for literary pursuits may join it ■ The building of a new church at Otnutau has been decided upo.n. .and tenders are. called for the work. The processed site is centrally situated. The Catholics of the Otautau parish are to be congratulated on their activity. Abo\ut 10.000 acres of the Edendale estate yet remlain to be taken up and splendid opportunities await the selector. The block comprises all qualities of farming land, and everyone in quest of a farm could not fail tio be suited at Edendale. The tenure is under the lease in perpetuity system, and rents vary according to the quality, improvements, and situation of the farm. The 'promoters of the concert for t*he benefit of the family -of- the late Mr. William Cavanagh are entitled to no small amount of praise for the good and charitable work undertaken by tihem. Altogether a smm of £110 was obtained, thanks to the efforts of Mr. 11. Crawford, the secretary, and his committee of workers.
