S. H. Co vent, Wanganui

(From our own correspondent.)

December 17. ; For many years past the annual exhi/batioto of oil paintings, water colors, fancy work, and plain sewing) done tty the pupils of the Wanlganui Convent has bteen an unfailing source of interest to all classes of the community. Besides the ordinary school subjects, which comprise all that is essential to a thorough education, the pupils find time to prepare a display for the end of the year that certainly redounds to the credit both of themselves and their teachers. This year's exhitfrtion is well in advance of previous efforts, and both in the quantity of the work shown and its undoubted merit, is i/n harmony with the statement with regard to the school made by Dean Grogan at last night's concert, viz., that the year 1903 stands out as tine 'hpst and brightest of its successful career. Whaitjetver doubts there may have T<een as to the success of the break-up entertainment were dispelled on Wedjnesd|ajy night, for, when the curtain rose at /7<.45 for the first chorus, the children looked out upon a large audience which filled the Opera House in every |p,art. The entertainment was on similar lines to those of previous years, but whether in chorus, or drill, or dance, or dramatic effort, there was the same unmis-

takable evidence of thorough training on the part of the Sisters which characterises emery entertainment conducted by them. The following programme was presented :— Chorus, Pupils of St. Joseph's School ; pianoforte solo, Miss D. Bull ; vocal duet, Misses Gol|an and J. Lloyd ; march, * Spanish drill,' Convent boarders ; vocal duet, Misses E. O'Reilly and M. Rohson ; pianoforte duet, Misses Tymons and N. Pine - h chorus, ' Funiculi Funicula/ Sacred Heart pupils ; hornpipe, junior pupils of Sacred Heart School ;i vocal solo, Miss V. Galpin ; pianoforte solo, Miss R. Perrett. The orchestra was under the direction ql Mr. J. L. Beck. The entertainment concluded with a play, ' Through Darkness to Light.' /The characters were very aWy taken by Misses O. Nicholas, L. Stanley, N. Dwyer, K. Quillinane, E. Gollan, B. O'Conmell, V. Qalpin, C. Balmer, W. Leo, W. Bergim, and M. Fitzgerald. At the conclusion of the entertainment Mr. Hatrick, Mayor of Wanganui, spoke in favorable teems of the work done iby the Sisters in the education and training of the young ladies committed to their care. He took advantage of the occasion to request in a public manner Dean Grogan to convey to Dean Kirk his sincere sympathy with him in his pro'tongted illmess. Mr. Hatrick concluded by wishing tihe girls a very pleasant vacation. Dean Grogan replied, thanking the Mayor for his kindness in attending the prize-giving and for his sympathetic reference to Dean Kirk. Rev. Father O'Sullivan, to whom was entrusted the onerous work of examining; the school then read the following prize list :— Matriculation Class.— Dux (Archbishop's gold medal)! : Mary Robjson.
