Holly Cross College, Mosgiel

The annual break-up and distribution of prizes took place in the Provincial Seminary, Holy Gross College, Mosgiel, on last Molnday. There were present his Lordship the Bishop of Dunedin, the Very Rev. J. O'Neill (Milton), Rev. P. Murphy, Adm. (Dunedin), Revl J. Cottey (South Dunedin) t Rev. D. Buckley (Dunedin), Rev. M. Howard (Port Chalmers), Rev. J. Listan ( (J>unedin!), Rev. H. W. Cleary (Dunedin), and the members of the College staff— Rev. Fathers Delany, Ryan, and O'Neill. A short but very excellent programme was g<one through, consisting of the following items : Overture (violins, mandoline, piano), College orchestra ; song, • Man of Sorrows,' Mr. H. Woods ; glee, • Men of England,' students ; piano duet, ' Qui vive,' Messrs. M. Soanlan and J. To bin ; dialogue^ ' Brutus and Cassius,' Messrs. C. Collins and H. Woods ; chorus, • Per Sigjnum Crucis,' students. First Latin Class : Prize, Cornelius Collins ; next in merit, John Griffin and Henry Woods. Second Latin Class : Prize, Michael Scanlan ; next in merit, Thomas Oonnolly. Third Latin and Greek Class : Prize, Daniel O'Connell and James Hanrahan (equal merit) ; next in meritJames McMinamin anil James Keough. Fourth Latin Class : Prize, Patrick Molloy and Ajugjustine McColl. Greek Class : Prize, Michael Scanlasn, Thomas Connolly, Cornelius Collins, amd J. Griffin (espal merit) • next in merit, Henry Woods. First English Class : Prize, Cornelius Collins and Michael Scanlan (equal merit) ; next in merit, Patrick Fennessy and James Tobin. At the close of the distribution Bishop Verdon complimented the students and professors on their year's work. He recalled the time, three arid a half years ago when a modest beginning was made with the seminary which had now progressed so satisfactorily, both on the material 1 side, in its buildings, etc., and in the number of its students, which hald risen in that sihort 'period to the respectable number of 20. He looked to the coming ye a r for an even greater measure of success, and exhorted the students to lay the foundation of gaod traditfloms in the place and wished them a happy vacation. Fathers O'Neill «and Murphy also spoke in congratulatory terms of tihe students and the staff and the manner in which the Seminary had progressed from the small beginning of the year 1900, and wished the students a pleasant holiday. On Tuesday morning the students left for their homes.

The Government is still issuing posters notifying that 4,129,666 acres of Crown lands are now available for settlement on application. Of this total, 1,24*5,002 acres are rural land, 145,006 acres are for lease as small grazing rutns, 2, 688,038 acres for lease as pastoral rums, and 1622 acres are township land. Under the Land for Settlements Act there are 20,973 acres for open lease in perpetuity, and 27,965 acres for lease as small grazing runs. Tn the Otago land district the area oipen fior selection is (says the ' Otago Daily Times '.) 99,900 acres, of which 40,959 acres are rural land in 648 sections, 55,187 acres in nine runs are pastoral lanids, and 3479 acres in 22 sections are open under the Land for Settlements Act. There is also open o!ne small grazing rim of 275 acres. In the Southland district there are open for selection 64,045 acres in 568 sections of rural land, 1,120,791 acres in 29 runs of pastoral lands, 6092 acres in 13 sections under the Land for Settlements Act, one small grazing run of 1658 acres, and 846 acres of township lands in 722 sections.
