An Irt eresting Discovery
The bones of another of the famous abbots of tho ancient Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds have iust been discovered on the site of the old Chapter House. This completes the list of six abljots recorded to have been buried there. The list is as fol.ows : Abbot Ovding, 1148 • Abbot Sampson (of whom Carlyle wrote), 1182 ; Abbot Richard Pc Tnsula, 1229; Abbot Henry, 1234; Abbot Edmund I)e Walpqle, 1248 ; Abbot Hugo' I , 1257. In the first live instances tho bones were in stone coffins, but, as the lids were missing, the bones, although lying in proper position, were mixed with earth and debris. 0 It is conjectured that the coflins were opened at tho time of tho Reformation and despoiled of some valuables supposed to have been interred with the bodies.
