The death is reported of the Very Rev Nicholas Crane, an Oblate of Mary Immaculate who died at the Bishop's Palace, Bendigo, on New Year's Pay For the past year or more Father Crane had been in failing health, and a few months ago was at death's door. He suffered for years from lung troubles. The deceased priest was originally attached to the Oblate House, London, and was sent to Australia in 1883 to collect funds wherewith to provide the Tower Hill district with a church. He was eminently successful, some £10,000 being sent forward for the praiseworthy purpose. He collected in many parts of New South Wales and South Australia. Father Crane was a preacher of no mean order, the announcement that he was to preach being sufficient to fill old St. Kilian's Church, Bendigo. He was a brother of the late Right Rev. Dr. Crane, O.S A , Bendigo's first Bishop. Four other members of the family devoted their lives to the sole service of the sanctuary, and their only sister is a Carmelite nun. Father Crane, who had reached the 64th year of has age, was a native of Wexford.
