auction in fair numbers, but unfortunately were quite unable to supply their requirements. An aged draught — one of a mob of 13 horses from North Canterbury — was passed in at £44 10s, this offer being in the opinion of his owner not equal to his value. Of the northern horses very few were sold, the reason for this being that the general quality of the animals was hardly that saleable in this 1 market. A rough unbroken colt, three years old, from the Clutha, . found a different owner at £35 ; and an eight-year-old spring-van mare from the Peninsula changed hands at £34. In the lighter classes only a few horses are at all worthy of mention. A rather nice stamp of a buggy mare from the Clutha district was disposed of at £23 10s, and a fair hack, six years old was sold for £22. In all, 15 horses changed hands at prices, taking into consideration their quality and age, quite satisfactory to the various owners. Good sound young draught horses suitable for town carting are in especial demand, and we have numerous inquiries for suitable animalsi. We quote : Superior young draught geldings, £50 to £55 ; extra good, prize horses, £56 to £60 ; medium draught mares and geldings, £37 to £4P : aged do, £24 to £36 ; upstanding carriage horses, £30 to £35 ; well-matched carriage pairs, £70 to £90 : strx>ng spring-van horses, £30 to £35 ; milk-cart and butchers' order-cart horses, £22 to £28 ; tram horses, £14 to £21 ; light hacks, £10 to £16 ; extra good hacks, £18 to £25 ; weedy and aged hacks and harness horses, £4 to £8.
