September 22. His Lordship Bishop Grimes was elected vice-president of the local Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at the annual meeting held List week. The Key. Fathtr Melu, S.M., Maori Missioner of Otaki, arrived hpre during the week, and is engaged on his periodical visit to the different native fettlements in the Island. The foundation-htone of the new church to be erected at Makikihi, in the Waimate parish, is to be laid by his Lordship Bishop Grim- s ou the first Sunday in October. The Sisters of the Minsion, Sacred Heart High School, Barbadoea street, were Huccet-Hfui in passing the following candidates at the June Trinity College Examination in Musical Knowledge :—: — Senior honors — Lizzie Brick, 73 marks. At the Timaru Convent on Thursday evening last a high-class and as a natural consequence most enjoyable literary and musical entertainment was given in honor of hie Lordship the Right Rev. Bishop Grimes, then on a visit to the town. The following programme was submitted and carried out in an efficient manner :—: — • Boat song ' (2nd division), ' Scarf drill ' (3rd division), ' Our Coronation day' (compositions) 'The soldiers in the park' (Ist division), ' Method ' (a composition), ' May Pole dance ' (2nd division), a scene from ' Polyenete,' ' Lutspiel ' (duet), ' The telephone ' (J. K. Jerome), ' Mon portrait,' 'Song of the Angels' (chorus). His Lordship the Bishop, now on an episcopal visitation to South Canterbury, met with a most enthusiastic reception at Temuka. On arrival of the express at the station the Bishop was met by the Very Rev. Dean Foley (who had preceded him a few days), the Rev. Fathers Fauvel and Kerley. The bellu of St. Joseph's Churoh rang out a merry peal of welcome, and flags were flown from the school and convent. On Sunday following his arrival the Bishop celebrated Mass at 7.30 a.m , and addressed the congregation present, which included a number of first communicants. These latter were afterwards entertained at breakfast by the Bisters, which was attended by the Bishop and clergy. High Mass was celebrated at 10 o'clock by the Rev. Father Fauvel. His Lordship preached an impressive sermon on the feast of the day, prefacing his discourse with an explanation of the beautiful rites and ceremonies observed during the visitation. There was again a large congregation. The choir gave a fine rendering of the Mass of the Immaculate Conception, and at the Offertory Mtßees Coughlan and Story gave an ' Aye Maria,' Mips M. Twomey. the organist, accompanying. The Bishop administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 60 candidates, after explaining its antiquity, significance, and responsibilities imposed upon those confirmed. Collections in aid of the Cathedral building fund were made at all the services by the Very Rev. Dean Foley, assisted by local collectors, and liberally responded to. In the afternoon the Bishop and Dean Foley drove to Pleasant Point, another part of the parish, where they found the chapel overcrowded. After devotions hia Lordship preached from the text, ' Send forth thy ppirit and thou shalt be created,' and again administered Confirmation to a number of candidates prepared by the Rev. Father Kerley. A collection towards the Cathedral fund was made, and the day's ceremonies concluded by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, given by the Bishop, assisted by the Rev. Father Kerley. The following morning Maps was celebrated by the Bishop, at which there was a laree congregation. Later od, at St Joseph's School, Miss Kathleen Twomey, on behalf of the pupils of the school, presented his Lordship with a cross of sovereigns. Miss Zoe Gillespie presented a prettily-arranged programme of the entertainment the children were about to go through, for which Miss Earl played an overture and the accompaniments in her usual brilliant ■tyle. At the conclusion of the programme his Lordship addressed the children. He thanked them for the unusual kind of cross they had given him to help towards the great work he had in hand. He said they had acquitted themselves remarkably well in the pleasant entertainment they had given him, and praised their diligence, which, he said, he had Been proof of by the reports which he had received of their examinations. Much joy waa manifested by the ohildren when his Lordship said that he would give them a holiday. In the afternoon his Lordßhip, accompanied by the Rev. Fathers Fauvel, Tubman, and Kerley, paid a visit to the Kerrytown School. The pupils gave an interesting entertainment, and made a presentation to Bishop Grimeß of a bird's nest full of sovereigns. His Lordship sincerely thanked the children for their munificent gift, and gave a short address of encouragement. It is about thiee years since Bishop Grimes last visited the Temuka district, on which occasion the parishioners gave liberal contributions to the Cathedral fund. On Sunday last he was at Timaru, and on Sunday next will be at Fairlie.
