DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND.

(From our own correspondent.) January 16. The local Marist Brothers left for the South last Monday to attend their annual retreat. Last Sunday evening Rev. Father Gillan preached a very fine sermon at St. Patrick's on the subject of Our Blessed Lady. Rev. Father Kehoe, of Parnell parish, who is at present away upon a much needed holiday, is expected to return shortly. The Rev. Father was in poor health when he left, and it is hoped that he will return with it fully restored. The Parnell people intend to make a presentation to Father Kehoe shortly after his return.

Details in connection with nexb St. Pattick's Day celebration are satisfactorily progressing, and the fete promises to be highly successful. The retreat of the local clergy is fixed to commence on Monday, January 20, immediately after which the annual diocesan conference will take place. An error appeared in my last week's letter, wherein it was stated that the composition, ' The snow lay on the ground,' was sung by Mr. H. Hiscocks. It should have read, 'composed by Mr H. Hiscocks. The Very Rev. Dean Grogan, S.M., of Napier, left here last Saturday by the Sierra for San Francisoo en route for Ireland. The geDial Dean was heartily welcomed here by a number of his old Napier parishoners, who also saw him off. Two Sisters of Mercy, from the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, left by the Sonoma for Sydney last Tuesday morning with the intention of acquiring wider knowledge in connection with their work on behalf of suffering humanity. Key. Father Gillan, of St. Benedict's, left for Gisborne last Tuesday, where he will conduct the retreat for the Sisters of Mercy. From there he proceeds to Napier, crossing over to the West Coast, and returning home by the Manukau. Father Gillan expects to be away about three weeks. Rev. Father Patterson, Adm , in St. Patrick's a few Sundays ago Btrongly urged the parishioners to support the N.Z. Tablet. At no time, he said, was there such abundant need for good Catholic literature in the family circle than at the present. Too often the columns of the secular Press contained matter injurious to youthful minds, hence it was that he asked the parents to place before their children the only weekly Catholic newspaper in the Colony.
