GREYMOUTH.

The heavy downpour of rain on the evening of December 20 (»ays the Grey River Argus) seemed to have no appreciable effect on the attendance at the concert given by the pupils of the Greymouth Convent School. The excellent programme provided at these annual concerts, no doubt accounted for the large attendance, but meritorious as have been the concerts in the past, last night's performance excelled them all. From the opening bars of the Bwinging chorus ' Away, away ' to the closing notes of ' Christmas,' the entertainment progressed without flaw or hitch. For the purposes of the coucert, the appearance of the school had been completely altered, and few would imagine but that the hall, with its well equipped stage, drop curtain, and complete stock of scenery, was anything else bnt a building solely devoted for the purpose. Messrs. Daniels and Guthrie gave invaluable help in the arrangement of the scenery. The instrumental numbers consisted of a duet played on three pianos by the Misses A. Skoglunr), Alice Hannan, E. Kemple L Cotile, M. E. Noonan, and J. O'Reilly. Time and expression were faultlessly marked and. the execution was finished. The same remarks apply to the duet played by the Misses O'Brien, J. Armstrong, C. Mahoney, A. irkogland, J. Mahoney, and M. Harris ; and a third duet by junior pupils, the Misses D. Lutz, M. E McClusky M. Arnett, M. E. McCarthy, M. Peterson, and A. Bowman with violin obligato by the Misses Florence Shanahan, Mary Keating Kate McHendry. and M. E. Noonan. Of the piano tolos the ' Polish dance,' played by the Misses N. McDonnell, M. Algie, andL Guthrie, and a mazurka by the Misses E. Kemple, M. E. Noonan" and L. Cottle, too high praise could not be given. ' ' Of the vocal cumbers a clas3 of 50 voices sang 'Away, away ' I know a bank,' and ' Christmas.' In her vocal numbers Miss Eileen Hannan scored a huge success. In response to an imperative encore she sang a ' Lullaby," which was even a greater triumph of artistic rendition. In the f olos in ' I know a bank,' she again distinguished herself. With Miss L. Cottle she also sang in the duet ' The Swallows.' The action songr, 'The Japanese fan,' by the junior pupils, the little Misses May Kilgour, Theresa Maboney, Muriel Swan, Louie Copley, Mary Higgins, Vera Hannan, Mary Johnston, Dorrie Lutz Pearl Hood, Pebel Hood, Mary Mahoney, Rita Hannan, Lena HigginH, Molly Clarke, Annie Bowman, Mary Ellen McCarthy Dottie Lutz, and Gladys Hannan, was excellently sung, and the accompanying action was graceful in the highest degree. In the 'Ribbon drill 'by the senior pupils, the Misses Florrie Shanahan Nellie Mahoney, Joan O'Rieily, Maggie O'Brien, Alioe Hannan' Eily Hannan, Mary Keating, Kate Kennedy, Molly Clarke, Maude Casey, Alice Doogan and Mary Kennedy, the most intricate of evolutions were so gracefully performed that the effect produced nad never before been excelled on a Greymouth stage. In the ' Doll duet ' the little fairies, Missus Vera Hannan and L. Coply raised the house to the highest pitch of enthusiasm, the acting and singing of each eliciting a treble encore. The tuneful operetta 'Rose and Rosette' gave scope for the display of the talent of a large number of pupils, which, needless to say, was taken full advantage of. The characters were taken by Misses E. Hannan, L. Cottle, M. E. Noouan, C. Mahoney, Pebble Hood, and Master Wilfred Hannan. During the evening the accompaniments were contributed by the Misses N. McDonnell, M. E. Noonan, and E. Kemple, all being played with taste and expression. At the conclusion of the concert Dean Carew thanked the large audience for their attendance, and congratulated the nuns on the excellence of the concert atid the grand results attained by their teaching.
