CONCERT AT CLINTON.

The Catholics of Clinton (writes a correspondent of the Clutha Leader) gave a very successful concert on Monday evening, June 8, in aid of the organ fund. The concert was opened by a piano solo by Miss Douglas, which was admirably played. A song, ' Out on the deep,' by Mr Whelan was given in good style (encored). His second number, ' The bugler,' a song that demands much attention from the singer, was done full justice to Miss Morrison, a lady well and favorably known on the concert stage, sang ' Killarney,' in a moat pleasing manner. In response to an imperative encore, Bhe sang with pleasing expression that pathetic song, 'As your hair grows whiter.' Mr Percy Martin gave ' Maid of Athens, 1 with violin obligate This number was well treated at Mr. Martin's hands, the singer's voice being in excellent tune with the accompaniment. Miss King's ' Jock o' Hazeldean ' was pleasingly and sweetly rendered. Her second effort, ' Jessie's dream,' was also nicely sung. Miss Finlayson played a violin solo. In the second part of the programme Miss Morrison sang , Robin Adair.' This item was charmingly rendered, being the gem of the evening. Miss Black, a visitor from Dunedin, was very successful in a patriotic song. Her next item was a Highland fling. Her gesture and action in the patriotic song were perfect, and her dancing was superb. One of the best numbers of the concert was a sacred song, ' Les Rameaux,' sung by Mr Martin with piano, organ, and violin accompaniment. Mr Martin, who was in good voice, sang well, whilst Mrs. Martin's wellknown skill as a musician at the organ, Miss Aggie Garden's light touch on the piano, and Miss Finlayson's sweetly-played violin, all helped to make this fine composition one of the best items of a good programme. A sailor's hornpipe, by Mr. Murtagh, was highly appreoiated, while the comicalities of Mr Jamie kept the audience in roars of laughter. Mr Jamie is always funny and his funnyisms are without the slightest tinge of vulgarity. A very successful concert was brought to a close by Mian Morrison and Mr Martin singing the duet ' Life's dream is o'er,' Miss Morrison's well-trained voice blending sweetly with Mr Martin's evenly-balanced light baritone. The accompanists were Mrs Martin and Mish Morrison. At the conclusion of the c jnoert the Rev. Father O'Donr.ell thanked the performers and the audience for attending in suoh large numbers, and spoke eloquently for the tolerant spirit and good feeling that prevailed in Clinton amongst all denominations. The rev. gentleman ooncluded by saying that such harmony would never be broken by any discordant note of his. The proceeds of the concert amounted to £17 odd. This sum, when added to what has already been subscribed, will more than pay for the organ.
