TIMARU.

(From our own correspondent.)

Jane 2.

The Marist Brothers' football team played their first match of the season on Saturday last against the Timaru High School, and won a decided victory against a heavier team by 18 points to 3. The team will be listed against all the district schools during the season, and is expected to give a good account of itself. The boys are coached by Rev. Brother George. A most desirable union has taken plaoe in the amalgamation of the two Catholic young men's clubs in the parish— the Aloysius Society and the Hibernian Club. A meeting of the members of both clubs took place on Wednesday evening last, the ReV. Father Tubman being in the chair, when a motion for union was unanimously carried. A committee was appointed to draw up rules suitable to the united club, which now possesses a strong membership and should have a very flourishing session. The naming of the club and the election of officers will take place at next meeting. A concert in aid of the Church Building Fund was held in St. Andrew's on Wednesday last, and was largely attended, notwithstanding the unpromising nature of the weather. The Church of the Sacred Heart choir, assisted by a few ladies and gentlemen, supplied the programme, which was much appreciated by the audience, the various singers being warmly applauded. The programme was aa follows .— ' Dear little shamrock ' and ' Simon the cellarer,' W. Jefferson , 'My father is growing old ' and 'I'll take you home again, Kathleen,' Miss Moyle ; 'Hot time in the old town * and ' Lily of Laguna,' Mr. Mahoney (encored) ; ' Barney O'Hea ' and 'Valley by the sea,' Miss Smith; 'Mary of Argyle ' and ' Tit for tat,' Miss McGuinnesa (encored) ; ' Isle crowned with shamrock ' and 'Sleeping camp,' Mr. Macdonald ; ' Doreen' and 'Good bye Mavourneen.' Mrs. O'Meeghan (encored) ; ' Musical party,' Miss McKennan ; Well stand and die together,' Mr. Eiby ; ' Touching 'em up a bit' and 'Up to date,' Mr Bennetts (encored) ; ' Norah O'Neill,' Mr. Moyle. M. P. O'Sullivan dar ced an Irish jig and was recalled. Miss E. MtGuinnePß played the accompaniments, and Mr. Emery supplied the music for the dance items. The Rev. Father Tubman, at the close of the concert, warmly thanked the audience for their liberal patronage and the various contributors to the programme for the excellent evening's amusement provided.
