Aderman Robert J. M'Connell, JP , Lord Mayor of Belfast, who was recently created a baronet by her Majesty, is not ufclike Mr. Rudyard Kipling in appearance. He is one of lreland'B beetknown pub ie men outt-ide the political rank?, and has done much to develop Belfast. He is by profession an auctioneer, valuer, and estate agent, and commenced his business career when he was lt> y< ars of age. He is now 4f>, but looks considerably younger. Energy is one of his most pronounced traits, and he was clearly born to succeed. The Sreaker of the Queensland Par' iament, Mr. Morgan (says the C'ttholtr Prtss), and the Speaker of the Parliament of New Ronth Wales, Mr. M'Court, are printers by trade. Mr. O'Sullivau (Minister for Works) is a compositor, so is Mr. Ashton (who has refused two portfolios), Mr. Hogue (ex-Minister for Education), Mr. Millen, M.L.C. (ex-member for Bourke, one of our foremost poll* ticians), Mr. Watson (of the Labor party), and others. In fact no profession is so well represented in politics as the printers. The author of My Neiv Curate is the scholarly Irish priest, the Rev. l\ A. Sheehan, of Doneraile. He was born in the town of Mallow, St. Patrick's Day, 1852 Here he spent his younger yeara sitting side by side with William O'Brien in the quiet National school. Father Sheehan was educated at Maynooth, and spent the first two years of his priesthood in Plymouth, England. Recalled to his native diocese, Father Sheehan labored for four years in his home parish of M»llow. Here he made his first euay into literature ; and it is characteristic of him that Father Sheehan's initial contributions should be children's tales. His love for little children amounts to almost a passion. He has since produced several sacce«sful books, notably Geoffrey Austin, St udent, and The Triumj/h of Failure.
