DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND. (From our own correspondent.) Apvill9. At the Saored Heart Church, Ponsonby, on Good Friday morning and evening, special services were conducted by the Very Rev. Dr. Lgran. On Easter Sunday Hijyh Mass was sung by the Very Rev. Dr. Egan. The choir, under Mr. J. H. Bosworth, rendered the music appropriate to the Mass in a finished manner. The hieh and side altars were very tastefully decorated for the feast. At bt. Benedict's the Holy Week services were well attended. High Mass was sung at 7 o'clock on Thursday morning, at which most of the children of the parish made their Easter Communion, under the care of their teachers. The Convent choir of Surrey Hills sang the Mass both oa Thursday and Saturday mornings. The Tenebraj was recited on Thursday and Good Friday nights, and the customary sermons were preached. At the 11 o'clock Mass on Easter Sunday Rev. Father Inness was the celebrant, Rev. Fathers Darby and Gillan deacon and subdeacon. The volunteers assisted at church parade. The services oonoluded on Easter Sunday evening with the solemn renewal of baptismal vows, procession, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. High Mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday at St. John's, Parnell, by the Rev. Father Kehoe. The church was beautifully decorated with choice white flowers. Mulvaney and Sullivan The Rev Father Kehoe preached on the Gospel of the day. In the evening Vespers were sung, and at the Benediction Miss Lorrigan sang an O Salutans,' a beautiful composition by the Rev. Father Kehoe After Vecpers Father Kehoe entertained the choir in the hall, where ample refreshments were provided and an excellent musical programme was gone through. During the evening the rev. gentleman, on behalf of the choir, in a few appropriate words, presented Miss Lorrigan with a beautiful gold watch, in token of their appreciation ot the valuable services rendered by her in the ohoir during the year. ° On Easter Sunday at St. Patrick's Cathedral there were large congregations at the early Masses, when numbers approached the Holy Table. During the 9 o'clock Mass, which was celebrated L Father Moore, of Bendigo, who delivered an impressive address to the children, the juvenile choir sang appropriate hymns. Ihere was a Solemn High Mass at 11 o'clock. The Very Rev Dean Re , llly waa celebran t» Father Moore deacon, Father Hennessy sub-deacon. The choir, under Mr. Hiscocks, rendered very efficiently Mozart's Twelfth Mass. In the evening at Vespers there was a crowded congregation. The Very Rev. Dean O'Beiily preached on the Resurrection, in which he incidentally referred to the fact that a local minister of religion defended the views of a scientist who expressed his disbelief in the Resurreotion, the preacher expressing his surprise that one who believed in the Bible as the rule of faith of Protestants could publicly from his pulpit support such views. Benediction of the Most Holy Sacrament followed. Mr. Hartweli presided at the organ in his usual efficient manner, Mr. Hiscocks again wielding the baton. The ceremonies of Holy Week began on Wednesday evening at St. Patrick's Cathedral, when the office of Tenebrse was sung. On Holy Thursday morning there was Solemn High Mass, the' celebrant being the Very Rev. Dean O'Reilly ; deacon, Rev. Father Moore ; sub-deacon, Rev. Father Hennessy ; master of ceremonies, Rev. Father Purton. In the evening, at seven o'clock, the office of Tenebraj waa again recited, the lamentations being sung by the Very Rev. Dr. Egan, 0.5.8., and the Rev. Fathers Kehoe and Moore, Fathers Hennessy and O'Hara assisting in the sanctuary. The Rev. Father Kehoe preached an impressive sermon on the Blessed Eucharist. On Good Friday the solemn and impressive ceremonies of the day commenced at 10 o'clock. The Very Eev. Dean O'Reilly was celebrant ; deacon, Father Moore ; eubdeaoon, Father O'Hara. Rev. Fathers Kehoe, Moore, and Heoneaey sang the Passion. In the afternoon the devotion of the Stations of the Cross were given by Dean O'Reilly. In the evening 1 the office of Tenebrae was said, the Rev. Fathers Kehoe, Moore, and Hennessy this time singing the lamentations ; a sermon on the Passion being impressively and eloquently delivered by the Rev. Father Moore.
