H.s Lordship very much Sn joyed the drive through the romantic scenery of the Catlins district and returned to Balclutha by way of Port Molyneaux. Ihe service took place at 3 o'clock in the afternoon when only a fair congregation assembled, owing, doubtless, to the inconvenience of the hour. On Wednesday night of last week a meeting of the ladies' branch of the Hibernian Society was held in the Christian Brothers' SchooL The Rev. Father Murph,y pecupied the chair, and there were a,15,0 present Rev. Fathef Cleary and Mr. J. O'Connor (secretary). The object of the meeting was to devise means by which the membership of the society would be increased, and take step 3 for its i affiliation with some central organisation. A committee wa« appointed to draw up a scheme in accordance with the purpose of the meeting. We believe that it only requires the aims and objects of the society to be more generally known to ensure a large increase in its ranks. The members have all the privileges of a Friendly Society, while enjoying the benefits of intercourse with their fellow Catholics. Su,ch intercourse cannot fail ti be of incalculable good to the members, and we hope that, in a short time we shall be in a position to chronicle a large increase in the membership of this admirable society. Me. A. Vallis, who has occupied the position of organist and choirmaster at St. Joseph's Cathedral for the past seven years, has deoided to take a well-earned holiday t^> visit bis relatives in England, and at the same time to get a closer insight into the higher studies of his profession. On Monday evening a social gathering was held in St. Joseph's School for the purpose of giving the choir, and Mr. Vallis's other friends in the congregation, an opportunity of saying good-bye to him before his departure Among those present were Rev. Father Murphy, who presided, Rev. Father Coffey. and nearly the whole of the members of the choir. A very pleasant evening was spent, the proceedings being diversified by song and recitation. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed to the programme : — Misses R. and K. Blaney, M. Drumm, and (!. Bush, Messrs P. Carolin, J. Scott, J. McKenna, B. Stevens. W. Rossitter, T. Hussey, and F. Stokes. The guest of the evening assisted with the accompaniments. Mr. Scott, M.A., gave a very interesting account of his travels in Europe, from which he recently returned. The Rev. Father Murphy, in making a presentation of a purse of sovereigns to the guest of the evening, referred in very complimentary terms to the great efficiency which the choir had attained under the leadership of Mr. Vallis during the past seven years. Mr. Carolin, one of the oldest members of the present choir, likewise bore testimony to the excellent work performed by Mr. Vallis since his connection with the choir. Mr. Scott, as a more recent member, spoke in a similar strain. Mr. Vallis, in a few words, returned thanks for the many kind works that had been said concerning his work, and also thanked the choir for their gift. Mr. Vallis, who left for Sydney on Tuesday, intends to be absent from the Colony for about nine months, his intention being to go Home by way of Suez, and returning through the United States should time permit. The arrangements, which were admirably carried out. were in the hands of a committee consisting of Misses Whelun, M. Johnston, R. Pearson, Smith, and Rogers.
