DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.

Thk usual weekly meeting 1 of the above Society was held in the Christian Brothers' schoolroom on Friday last. There was a good attendance of members, the juniors fuirly carrying off the honours of the evening in that respect. Apologies were received from Mr. C. E. Haughton and from the secretary. In the absence of the presidents Mr. J. Hally was voted to the chair. Mr. P. Carol in read a paper written by Mr. Tubman on ''The rise and progress of Christianity in Englan I." The paper was carefully written and traced the history of the English people back to the fifth century. It was a brilliant display of research and reflects the greatest credit on the writer as a student. Mr. Carolin did himselt justice by his careful and intelligent manner of reading the paper. The essay, evoked, perhaps the largest display of speech* making <>t the session. The following members were very active in the discussion which followed the reading of the paper :— Messrs. G. Hesford, A. Quelch, J. Black, H. Miles, Leo Pastorelli. S. Columb, C. Hall. J. O'Connor, J. Chapman, D. Columb. C. Delany, T. Hu*sy and the chairman. It was generally conceded that this was the most successful evening of the session. It was recently suggested that a series of prizes should be given I to juniors who distinguished themselves in extemporaneous speaking, and judging from the numerous efforts and the success attained on thi* occasion, it is quite evident that many young members have already framed strong designs on these prospective prizes.

The wife of Councillor Thomas Atkinson, of Ryton. formerly of By well Hall Farm, StocKfield-on-Tyne, was (say.s the Catholic 7'/w<s) received into the Church by Canon Wrennall, of Sttik on the Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross. In an inten u>\v with the Holy Father a few days ago the Archbishop of Paris, it is .said, referred to the Leo Taxil affair. The Popo quietly remarked that it was for him to bless all who professed repentance of errors and a desire to become good Catholics. If unworthy persons had recourse to deception, this would recoil upon themselves lx/jause it was impossible to deceive God. There is some talk as to the probability of the United appointing a representative at the Vatican, and rumour has connected the recent visit of Archbishop Ireland to Washington -vitb the desire said to be entertained in the highest quarters^ amongst public men in the United States that such an appointment should be made.
